A friend dated a girl called Margo (Margot/Margaux) who looked very much how her name suggested; tall, blonde, elegant and with a plummy accent to match. However she totally embraced the nickname she picked up at school.

Everyone knew her as Maggot!

Not as good as McGill/Lil/Nancy.

I suppose I should have added that my mother’s given name was Opal, and her sisters were my Aunt Jewel and Aunt Ruby. Jewel married a man named Wille Clyde, and his first born was therefore Willie Clyde Jr, who everyone just called “WC”. Then there was my cousin Donnie Paul and so on. All in Florida and my mother’s childhood was spent in a NW FL logging town that no longer exists at all, dirt floor poor etc. I grew up meeting all my mothers family when young so the names weren’t unusual to me at all.

All of my grandfather’s siblings have a middle name starting with the letter V.
Vernon, Virgil, Virginia and Vesta.
At home, they addressed each other by their middle names.
Out in the “world”, they used their first names.
Kinda odd.
They were all born around the turn of the last century.
They were tough, hard working ranchers from around Bakersfield, California.
I’m named after Vern.
I’m proud.

He was smarter than all of us.

My stepmother taught kids how to read. One year, she taught a kid named Lamonjelo who had a twin brother named Oranjelo.

These were names on official rosters.
