This is very much like the conversation on WZLX this morning about mentioning something in front of your phone, TV or computer and then finding adds related to that conversation while browsing or checking social media.

    Anyone see the movie V?

I guess someone should mention 1984 too?

Hold on let me take the tape off my camera, microphone, my eyes and my mouth. Hear no . . . See no . . .

I swear at times I can just think about something and related ads will show up.

Beware the Thought Police, I guess...

    These are strange days indeed.

Speaking of crazy conspiracy theories, I saw a movie last year about a guy who worked for the NSA, and publicly blew the whistle on a massive government conspiracy to monitor everyone's communications - cell calls, texts, e-mails, everything. No warrants, no criminal suspicion - just cataloging everything anyone communicates to anyone else. And they had these bots that would go through it all, looking for key words or phrases associated with subversion. In the movie, the dude had to flee the country and take refuge in Russia (!) because the US government wanted to try him as a traitor and put him in an electric chair.

    Whacked-out stuff, right?

People are so paranoid these days.

There are 321 MILLION Internet-connected devices in the United States. That makes your odds of being surveilled 1 in 321,000,000. The odds of winning the Mega Millions lottery last night were 1 in 258,890,850.

You do the math. You're more likely to win a $2 billion dollar lottery drawing than have your PC camera hacked and used against you.

Math is hard. But, that seems pretty easy to understand, doesn't it?

But there are hundreds of thousands of hackers working every minute of every day.
    Time to redo the math.

"Hundreds of thousands" vs. 321 MILLION.

Millions of people played the lottery. The odds of one particular person winning didn't change.

    The math remains the same.

Are they drawing the Lottery every minute of every day with a possibility of hundreds of thousands of winners that all get unlimited attempts at winning?

Have you seen the Snowden documentary movie? It made me a believer. Is our government really protecting us from ourselves or spying on us?

    With all due respect;

No, the math is not the same.

I don't worry about it. I use my web camera for 4+ hours each day. I pretty much don't use my computer when I'm not working. So if you want to see me frowning and pounding diet cokes, go ahead and hack my camera.

There are whole industries based on data harvesting now, and I don't feel compelled to make it any easier for them, so my laptop has it's input devices shut off.

That said, my smart phone is snitching on me constantly. Oh well.

This weekend, the kids and I placed our halloween decorations outside. Amongst them was a cat skeleton that we put on our porch. Our dog saw that on our porch and began barking like crazy.

I told you that to tell you this:

A couple of hours later, the wife and I were standing in the kitchen. I told her I was going to Home Depot to pick up some irrigation parts to do some repairs and asked did she need anything. "Yep", she said, "can you get me some steer manure and some black bark." Just then our dog started barking like crazy again, but this time it sounded kind of like he was barking from inside a tin can and I could see him and he wasn't barking and the barking was coming from behind us. My wife and I suddenly realized that Alexa had, for reasons I still can't begin to guess accurately, recorded our dog barking (and God only knows what else) and was playing back our dog barking at the command "black bark". Did I mention our little dog is black? The last thing Alexa will have ever heard in my house is, "Unplug that damn thing right now."

Make of that what you will, but it absolutely happened and if you'll excuse me now, I'm off to get some tape for the little camera on my laptop.

I figure if they hacked my camera they are already in my computer anyway so what does the camera yield? An old guy sitting there looking at a screen or a view of the wall behind me. I suppose they could get to see someone doing the same at a Starbucks.
