A 10 year old that loves Metallica will really love some custom shop ESP guitars loaded with EMG pickups running though some Mesa and Diezel amps. Oh, and maybe a JC120 for some cleans. Don't skimp. Buy big!

+1 on the Boss Medal Zone.

Maybe even better the Boss Metal Core pedal.

Avoid the Boss metal zone pedal. It’s controversial amongst players. I was a huge Metallica fan in middle/high school and I can promise that’s not a good way to approximate their sound. Avoid it. A Boss DS-1 Distortion pedal will be a suitable pedal for a 10-yo. It won’t be exactly it, but like everyone is saying, to sound just like them will be expensive. The DS-1 should be easy to find and for right around your budget.

What is the budget? The Boss GT-1 will get him Metallica and a lot more.

    .

    Check out this \\metal board// ;)

These are all $20-$25 pedals via Amazon. Get the targets from the thread and then search these, Amazon, and this channel for appropriate clones.

I'd think that either a Marshall Shredmaster or suitable copy of it could potentially work very well, because it has a contour control for being fairly precise about how much or little mids you want, w/o potentially sounding cheesy like the mids controls on some distortion pedals might. It's been awhile since I've listened to any Metallica songs, but I do seem to recall that both Master of Puppets and And Justice For All have a particular scoop to the mids. That sound changed (again, going from memory) for the Black album and I guess whatever came after that, so I'd think the contour control could be repositioned for playing along to the songs on those albums.

So there's the Visual Sound Son of Hyde, and there's the Joyo High Gain Distortion, which are both fairly close to the original Shredmaster, or at least how it's probably relevant. You should be able to find either one for pretty cheap.
