Falling down under the upside
whilst the t60 is much like a lot of peavey's early product (i.e., sorta ugly, not sexy, and usually disrespected), the fact remains that it was, and is a decent instrument, and is a good buy....i can recall playing 3 or 4 of them over the years, though i never owned one myself....most of the t-series guitars are solid and good sounding....they're not gonna help you get chicks, but they will help you jam.....$200 is not a bad price at all, especially if it includes the case....

just saw a T variant a few weeks ago...

not sure if it was the 60, could have been one of the 'spinoffs' with the single blade pickups that i seem to remember...

for those curious, it's at Bill's Music House in Maryland. they should have a website by now. you'll probably have to email them about this guitar though, and i'm sure it's overpriced...

i knew 2 guys years ago who started on these guitars - both ended up having impeccable chops. i know you can't chalk that up to a guitar alone, but it is a testament that they had an ample tool in their hands.

too bad the Peavey stuff frequently gets passed by. even i was obviously in 'better than Peavey' mode whilst in that music store a few weeks back...

Peavey T lovers should check out this website !

It's a Dutch site dedicated to the early Peavey guitars. It's in Dutch only, but there's some great pics, especially on the "Models" and "On Stock" pages.

Thanks for the heads-up.

That looks like a really nice one. I e-mailed the seller asking if he would ship overseas. There was another one with a rosewood board on ebay last week, but the seller would not ship to Europe. It sold for $177.

Cheers,

J.J.

One Difference Between a T-60 and a Tele...

Is that you can still talk to the designer of the T-60, Chip Todd. He's still coming up with radical ideas for guitars, too, in his shop in Austin, TX.

I have owned three of those (currently I still own one) and they proved to be dependable stage guitars but the weight of their Ash bodies became a little much for me which prompted me to selling two of them and keeping the favorite of the bunch.

I also owned a couple of the cheaper version, the T 15 which is a guitar with which I developed a love affair. I still own one of those too, but Nowadays I use my Cort Jim triggs and my Hohner TE custom double bound tele on stage.

I wanted a T-60 for years after a buddy of mine used one in the seminal local (Gainesville FL) punk rock band called Roach Motel. He's called George Tabb and wrote for years for the punk zine MaximumRocknRoll, and has written a book or two, so if anyone here is into punk you may've heard of him. He still plays T-60's in his current band, Furious George.

Anyhow, a couple years ago I stumbled on a black T-60 in a pawn shop on the day of New Year's Eve, and they were having a year-end sale. Everything 1/3 off. The guitar was in great shape, w/ohsc. Sale price was $200 and I didn't even dicker.

Which is rather unlike me.

They're neat guitars, especially once you learn to use the variable coil-split function.

Btw, poop in T-60 circles is that some of the solid-color ones were made of poplar rather than Northern Ash like the naturals, which is what makes the naturals so heavy. I don't know enough about wood to be sure, but mine does seem to be lighter than some naturals I've played.

had one

I bought a T60 new in the late 70's, it was a cool axe, natural finish, kinda funky looking though, too many screws in the LARGE pickguard IMO, mine was as heavy as a Les Paul.
The neck was on the slim side, tonally it was pretty cool, from humbucker to single coil, and any mix of in between the neck and bridge plus a phase switch.
They are still available pretty inexpensively, though the prices are going up, nothing like the same era Fenders and Gibsons.
My brother had a sunburst model that wasn't quite as heavy, they did make some with rosewood boards too.
I wouldn't pay big bucks for one, but if you find one cheap and dig the slim neck go for it.

In the late 70's I played in a band in High Point, NC. The other guitarist played a black, single-cut Gretsch Duo-Jet. It was an amazing piece. He gigged the daylights out of it. It sounded great. He loved it. I loved it!

One night he showed up at a gig with a "new guitar". Earlier that day, he traded his Duo-Jet + cash {and a pretty good chunk of it, too} for a T-60.

I was shocked. Even though the vintage market was far, far from what it is today, that was still, by all accounts, a sucker trade in anybody's book.

To this day, when I hear "T-60", I immediately think of that black Dou-Jet and just about cry. Sorry, guys, but to me a T-60 represents all that's wrong with the world!

{you'd think by now I'd be over it...wouldn't ya? :) }

My first electric guitar was a tobacco-burst T 60. I sold it to get my Strat when I was about 15... I still have the Strat. Every now and then I think about picking up another one - just for sentimental reasons, but to be honest i'd never play it, so I doubt I ever will. I remember it being really heavy, and not very exciting to play, a bit sterile if that makes sense. Maybe it was just that one though...??

Yes, the dude from the Bottle Rockets (Brian Henneman) plays them, and man, he makes 'em sound good.

And for the record, it's "Valory". And I'm only 34.

Awesome link. I got a T-60, T-15, T-30..and a Patriot, great affordable instruments. Thank god they haven't been a part of the vintage guitar monstrosity.

I used to have a T-60. Liked it, but ended up selling it as not in the same league with the strat I had at the time.

IMHO, the ones to look for are the Razer, the Mantis and the Mystic. This was Peavey's wild trio of '70s axes... I used to have a Razer, it was essentially the same as a T60 in terms of the neck and pickups, also had the ferrite pickups with the single/double coil function when you rolled off the tone. I believe the Mystic and Mantis had this also. What sets these three apart is their body shape. The Razor is sort of like a capital "K" lying on its side... looks weird but it's extremely comfortable to play sitting down. I know of two bluesmen, Little Eddie Kirkland and T-Model Ford, who play Razers and both sound fantastic with them. The only drawback is that you can't lean it up against your amp, the bottom of the guitar is pointed and it doesn't balance well. Little Eddie Kirkland fixed that, though... he cut the point off the bottom and sprayed the thing metallic gold. Great axe.

Some of you will know what I'm talking about...

Guys,

It's funny that I came across this discussion because I'm thinking about trying to find one of these guitars! I had one about ten years ago but had to sell it :( Besides Ebay, whee would be another good place to find one?

Thanks,
Tony T.

If you're willing to drive to Kings Mtn. N.C. they have a three pup model on the wall there, P.M. me if you want to know more.

I myself have the T60 in sunburst and a natural T40 bass. Stu Hamm said the T 40 was one of the best basses ever if it weren't for the weight....
