In a sense we're comparing apples and oranges here. I've already said that The Jam were pre MTV whereas the Cure took off when MTV was getting into it's heyday.
It's also important to note that the Jam released 6 albums in 5 years, burned brightly (in the UK), and then split. The Cure hadn't had a similar level of succes with their first 6 albums and it was pretty much their 7th when things started to take off for them. They've also had a 42 year career, and counting.

It's always amusing to read haughty dismissals of an argument that assail "ill-applied logic", yet can't seem to put their money where their mouth is to actually pose any sort of counter argument. I mean, by what you say it should be easy for you, right? Your posts on this topic remind me of Shakespeare- "...full of sound and fury, signifying nothing".

Kind of like the Cure, now that I think of it.

Interesting analogy, in that I've never encountered a ghost that keeps responding to posts on the internet.

Oof... that list isn't the flex you think it is.

I don't need to fool anyone, it's pretty simple:

-I posted something.
-You continue to complain about it, without being able to refute the argument in any way.

I don't know what possesses people to continually point out that they have nothing backing up their loudly-voiced opinions, but by all means rock on with your bad self.

You are the only guitarist I've ever heard that rated Robert Smith at all, but fair enough.

Hook has said he developed his chordal style purely because it was the only way he could hear himself with the crap amp he had starting out. He certainly does more with it than the Cure ever did.
Just because you don’t like bands that would sound wildly different if the cure never existed doesn’t mean the cure isn’t influential.

Most of disintegration era cure has Robert smith playing bass instead of guitar. Peter hook and Robert smith are apples and oranges about it, but they are both enormous influences on how i play guitar.

the jam never released anything as mediocre as the last few clash albums.

(I love the self titled and London calling. But these days I’d rather listen to the adverts or the Newtown neurotics.)

I'll take Combat Rock over The Gift, but that's just like, my opinion, man. When the Clash dabbled in other genres they never seemed as stilted and awkward as the Jam did trying to play soul music.

Anyone into ted Leo’s old band, chisel? They started off pop punk/indie rock and blossomed into a pretty great mod band by their last album.
+1 for Chisel!
I refuted your argument twice, but you didn't engage on any of the points I made. If you want wave your 'I hate The Cure' flag go ahead, but don't think you're engaging in an honest debate; you're just a snob.
With actual facts and logic, I mean. But hey, if sales numbers are your yardstick for greatness, enjoy. Check out Taylor Swift, she must be awesome!
Does Guitar Player magazine count? They've rated him highly enough to give him the front cover twice.
Dee Dee Ramone got a signature bass from Fender, too- I dig the Ramones, but stuff like that isn't a measure of instrumental prowess, it's about moving units.
Punk rockers carefully curate their "I don't care what anyone thinks" attitude. Getting people to talk about them is part of the schtick.
The true meaning of Punk Rock is arguing about the meaning of Punk Rock.

In a world that contains Joy Division (and New Order), Bauhaus, the Smiths, Echo & The Bunnymen and even Depeche Mode, I just see the Cure as also-rans. Your mileage may vary, though.

I was at a gas station yesterday that was playing Joy Division (Transmission, not Love Will Tear Us Apart), that was weird.

I would hope all musicians understand that there's more to music and music making than "instrumental prowess."

Bars and clubs and coffee shops.

Right, small local businesses where the owners either specifically like the Jam, or like the types of playlists the Jam would be included on. Not representative at all of what a typical person in the US would hear.

Tastes vary, but echo feels like the also ran in that group to me.

Disintegration is easily one of the best guitar records of all time.

I think i go reasonably typical places. I like coffee and i like beer. Don’t most people?

I was at an after party for my friend’s birthday karaoke night last night and people kept putting on Taylor Swift and I kept failing to see the appeal. The song she did with Bon Iver is ok but I’d rather hear Chealsea Wolfe.
