I mean, Weller is a name I hear in passing. Never knew he was from the Jam. Jam split in '82 according to the Google search I just did. Mayhaps Weller hasn't done as much as other "started in 70s, band broke up in the 80s" guys such as Glenn Danzig, Henry Rollins, Iggy Pop, or embarrassingly for everyone, Jon Lydell?
Smith is a name people know, and actively associate with the Cure. And his hair. And his obnoxious makeup, which for all anyone can guess may have been tattooed on since '85 with nobody noticing.
So while I can agree that he's way too old (at twice my age) to wear smudged makeup and be depressing, he's earned his niche in music and pop culture, and nobody would recognize him without it. It's not like David Lee Roth spraying his hair on. It's more like "obviously Lemmy wouldn't shave or get the mole removed " territory.

It'd be like Cheetah Chrome talking smack about Henry Rollins. If you have to Google who Cheetah is, you've proven my point.

But his reactions:

We're funny.

Got people talking about his otherwise forgotten band.

Could be some kind of thing where Paul weller really wants to be prancing around in all that makeup !! I don’t know why else he would care . Who is Robert smith hurting ? Seems like a nice guy who just happens to like to wear makeup :)

Might want to do a little more "Google homework"... widely regarded as one of the most influential singers/songwriters/guitarists of the Post-Punk genre.

Agreed, he is not for everyone, and he's a crank, but an icon nonetheless.

Yikes. Careful Paul - what you give is what you get…

That’s too bad. I never really got into The Jam that much. Both good in their own right but Smith is far more creative which, for me, already puts him miles ahead.

Perhaps this is all hype for a duet in the making? That would be interesting.

Weller is a notorious grumpy bugger, so no surprises here really.

Both of 'em are pretty well-known, they are both pretty iconic figures, and for good reasons.

However, I have always listened to The Cure far more than The Jam/Style Council/solo Weller.

I'm almost exactly the same age as Robert Smith, but I like to think I'm wearing better than he is...no hair or makeup for me these days though

Bob, spotted without too much make-up recently:
