I have one that no one seems to know unless you are a Smithereens groupie... Time and Time again. This is the tune that put me onto them when I was in HS. Heard it on the radio and was hooked, and still love it. RIP Pat...

DAMN!....this is just TOO sad.....way too many great songs to list here, but I will always have "Blood and Roses" at the top of my favorites.
Back in the eighties, MTV would have a program at 10:00 pm called Live at the Ritz.....I would get off work at 9:30-9:45, and rush home to see and tape it. I saw Smithereens on this, actually before I ever saw one of their videos. To say I was blown away (pun acknowledged) would be putting it mildly. I became a hard and fast Smithereen's fan from that moment on. A while back I made a modest GoFundMe contribution on behalf of Jim's wife, and I knew Pat was having some health issues (seeing his ballooning weight due to medication) but this is unexpected. SO SAD....another terrible loss to the music world.

    RIP, Pat.
We used to share a bill with them at the Dirt Club, often.

Agreed— what a shame. I really had hoped to see them again next year. Pat’s still the only rocker I can think of who introduced their biggest song with “Let’s Go Mets.” Not that I care about baseball, but little touches like that bring a bit of extra personality to the music.

Damn. I've loved The Smithereens since the first time I saw the video for Blood And Roses on MTV in Summer '86. Not only did they sound like nobody else on MTV at the time, they looked just like regular guys, not poodle cut pretty boys.

    Sure gonna miss 'em...

I love Drown In My Own Tears.
I just started doing it with my friend Scott.
    Great solo, too.
    Pat had the songwriting gift.
The band had that simple, direct feel.
    It's actually very rare, IMO.
I "discovered" the band late, in the late 90s.
I got a couple of their CDs when I managed a pawn shop at that time.
We took a lot of CDs.
Hearing Drown always takes me back to that time.

My condolences to his family and friends. He'll be sorely missed. At least he left us a great catalog of truly original music than we can celebrate his life with. RIP Pat.

Me too. Saw that video on MTV at like 1:30 a.m. and went bought “Especially for You” that week. It’s one of my favorite albums and one of my favorite bands. They always put on great show when I saw them and were always friendly and generous with their time after.

They are/were the kind of band I always wanted to be in.

"Green Thoughts" to this day remains one of my favorite albums ever. "Something New" off of it is one of those hidden gems known to Smithereens fans.

Pat's passing is a loss for the music world.

I posted this on TGP. Thought I'd share it here, too...

They weren't a band I followed. When I read about Pat, I went to You Tube to see who they were. Played the first song, "Oh, I remember that one." Played the second, then the third and so on. Oh, yeah. THAT band! Music that I used to hear on the radio that I'd turn up or listen to intently. I'm sorry I never went to see them. I understand the connection so many of you had with Pat and the band.

    RIP Pat.

Condolences to your family, friends and fans.
