I would like to paint the inside edges of the f holes on my semi hollow from gold to black.Do I have to sand the old paint off?Last time I tried painting a f hole,it didn't look so good.Paintbrush strokes show. And it's hard to follow the edge.Should I tape over 1/2 length wise so the paint doesn't go over the edge onto the body.Any ideas? Thanks

What exactly do you want to do? Create a faux binding with paint? Or simply outline the F holes on the face of the guitar?

I had an old epiphone dot about 20 years ago. I used a wide tip felt pen to blacken the edges of the f-holes

Probably a paint pen. I wouldn't use a brush so that leaves just the pen which will give you much greater control. I'd try a very light sand to give the paint some texture to stick to, I wouldn't sand back to wood, just a light buff and go for it.
Good luck.

definitely sand the edges smooth. if you feel nervous about freehand you can tape the top. run the tape over the hole & cut with an exacto using the edge as a guide. I like One Shot paint for all kinds of stuff like this. professional paint for sign painter and pin stripers, it flows easy and covers well. it cleans up with mineral spirits which will not harm the finish. available at good art stores & auto paint suppliers.

It's much easier if you don't want paint on the top to make it look like binding.
You could mask the top with tape and trim it along the F hole, or just keep a rag with some naphtha to clean up goofs.
It's easy.
Getting it off is harder.
I had a 70s walnut 345 that had the f holes painted with white-out.

Thanks all. No,I don't want to paint the top. There's no way I could make straight lines.I just want the inside.I sanded a little. But there are little drips underneath.I used the back of a razor black to scrape them off.Just waiting for paint pens now.
