The BBC did a series of documentaries on the guitar, drums and bass a few years ago. The bass episode was presented by Tina Weymouth and concentrated on the lesser known session type players. Worth looking out for.

And those niche bassists like Jah Wobble and Bill Laswell whose main contribution is putting together a broad mix of musicians with some very creative results. Bill Laswell's music has been called "collision music".

The BBC special...

Thanks for the heads up!

Edited to add: There are 3 dead audio spots all less than a minute long. I'm really liking this!

The one I posted is an hour long and has a very short audio dead space towards the beginning. It last less than a minute. Thanks again for the name of this show, it's really good

Added to the list of forgotten:. Bootsie Collins.

Im not familiar with those guys, can you recommend a good song?
Sorry for the late response. The Vapors are best known for the one hit wonder, "Turning Japanese" but I thought the bass work on any Vapor song was great. For some reason, I'm partial to their album, Magnets.

Andy Rourke - The Smiths

Check out one of Andy's lines that someone created as a 10-minute loop:

It's hard to think of a more unique and creative bassist that was totally overlooked than Andy Rourke. His bass lines often function like a rhythm guitar underneath Marr's more florid and intricate arpeggios.

Rourke's bass playing on "Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now" is a classic example of his unique ability to craft fairly busy and borderline jazzy bass parts that never detracted from the track as a whole.

RIP Andy Rourke

Bill Rea, from Atlanta, has been a huge influence on my bass playing (if you can call it that). His performances and recordings with Glenn Phillips are phenomenal.
