I’d say that an unfortunately accurate answer to this question would be just about all of them. Many of us on this forum can name tons of bassists, but to the general public they’ve never been noticed much. Certain players, like McCartney, Sting, and Flea have become well know names, but how many others can casual music consumers name?

Even the movie That Thing You Do contributes to this by listing the bass player, who is never named in the movie, as T.B. Player in the credits at the end.

As far as bassists go, I’ll mention Ronnie Lane (Faces, both big and Small) and Peter Quaife (the Kinks).

Burke Shelley was a solid player.
Bill MacCormack may be best known for 801, but his contribution is recognised on the album cover for all to see. Ruddy marvelous!
Pete Way was way more than his stage persona.
