Anyone know what side is the outer foil on an Emerson Cap? I can't find a ring marking it on this one.

That's pretty much what I decided. I assumed the right side when reading the text was the outer foil. Though it does make sense to me that the outer foil going to ground could provide a little bit better noise rejection, as well as the psychoacoustic effects of knowing it's in the "right" way. But I'll be objective this time and use my ears. I watched a you tube video that demonstrated that the markings arent always correct anyway. Made me want to get an o-scope so I can test and mark all of mine.

I cannot hear a difference, but now you ask... Usually the thickest end is the outer foil.

If you can see, the LEFT side is different and thicker than the right side. The thicker one is what is used to fill it with oil. That is the outer foil.

A friend of mine, electronic and a freak of sound and condensers, and friend over all says and swears that it makes less noise if solded propperly. He even demostrates it with an oscilloscope.

He has a page talking about it. Sorry, is in Spanish

Do an experiment for us and try it both ways. Report back if you can tell the difference!

Probably a good idea. More likely I'll see how it behaves and flip it if there is anything I'm not liking about the tone control or noise level.

A 2-cent ceramic cap performs just as well in these ultra-low-voltage AC applications, and leaves way more dollars in your wallet.
Exactly!! Yes, the Emerson caps looks sooo cool, but what really matters is actual measured capacitance value.
FWIW this cap is simply shunting to ground; IMHO outer foil orientation is a moot point in a guitar context.
