It's probably the most dramatic way somebody can leave the other, stepping on a plane and flying away. But John Denver isn't the only one who wrote a song using that premise.

So let's start a thread about other songs which are about that.

So let me start with a song done by my country's answer to Elvis: Peter Koelewijn who is best known the world over for his version of "Living next door to Alice" as "Alice, who the F&^# is Alice?" but here he is with his absolutely heart breaking song "KL-204/Als ik God was" (If I were God) and a close translation to what the lyric say.

Driving down the highway between Utrecht and Amsterdam I'll take the turn at Vinkeveen.
Finishing my cigarette heading to Shiphol-Amstelveen
I take the corner a little too sharply
Ash falls on your skirt and you look in my eyes
I turn down the radio and all of a sudden words fail me
As I try to express what I really wanted to say

Are you thinking about the same thing too?
But we already went to far to make a return
    You light me another cigarette
And I see a Martinair Jet take of in the distance
"Oh how I love you" goes through my mind when walking through the departure hall
It seems like the entire world is looking at us
When a voice calls out for all passengers for KL-204 to start boarding

    But if I were God
And I saw that silver bird fly over
Knowing it was taking you so far away from me
If I were god, if ONLY I were god
I'd reach out and pick it from the sky
And have it return you back to me
If only I were god oh if only
But at 20 thousand feet in the air
You wouldn't be able to see me standing there.

"I'll write you after I found my footing again" I heard your soft voice say
I nod in agreement but I already miss you straight away
As you make your way through passport control
You turn around and give me a very last smile
I return the smile but something has died
As the realization sets in that it's over for real

I'm staring out of the window of the restaurant
Experiencing the sight of Schiphol at night
At the very end of the runway, I see a landing light
A jet from El Al lands after it's flight
The coffee is too hot and bitter
I see a Stewardess smile at me and the PA announces
"Final call for passengers to start boarding KL-204"
    Oh how I hate Schiphol!

As I drive down the highway Utrecht-Amsterdam
I'll take the turn to Vinkeveen
There's a few bars in Hilversum
I guess I'll just go there instead.

She helped me with my suitcase
    She stands before my eyes
    Driving me to the airport
    And to the friendly skies

    Going through security
I held her for so long
She finally looked at me in love
    And she was gone

This is a fun song to play rhythm guitar on ( I just do it at home now on acoustic, but I can see sticking in a set list, fits in with our similar-era stuff)
This one keeps you on your toes with chord changes/ arpeggios.

I have nothing against Steve Miller. Hippie era and all.
"Take the Money and Run" paints an entire movie

How about escaping from someone/something TOGETHER on a plane? I'm bending the rules because this song is fantastic. Wait for the fuzz bass.
