I need to downgrade back to Yosemite. I work a lot on virtual machines (vmware) and they became unusable (read-only) with El Capitan. Too bad ...

I also need to do that, can you tell me how that can be done? Since "EL Capitan" my iMac no longer recognizes SD cards or USB plug ins.
Help!
Thanks for any advice.

I tried reverting to Yosemite tru Time Machine. Didn't work (havent backed up my applications) . So I reinstalled El Capitan and paid $40 to Tuxera for NTSF compatibility. I really need my virtual machine for my programming class (Windows Visual Studio)

lesson learned !

I'm getting occasional error messages in Mail saying that Hotmail messages cannot be moved to Trash. It's not an error I've ever experienced previously so I'm putting it down to the system upgrade. But then Mail has always been a bit flakey so nothing new there.

Just updated my mid 2013 4 GB MacBook Air.

Interestingly enough, the cutting-edge IT guy that I am, I had come to the conclusion that Adobe Photoshop Elements v6 was pretty much hard-broke with Yosemite. At least it hasn't been working for me. At least not reliably.

On a whim I launched PE v6 tonight and it has been rock solid...

Like I said, I am CUTTING EDGE!

Downloading it now.
Maybe asking for trouble 2009 MBP 4Mb RAM. Fresh install and upgrade to Yosemite slowed things down a bit compared to Snow Leopard, Lion, etc.

Anymore I'm just burned out with upgrades, updates, service packs, hot fixes. GAS is by far the dominant money sponge, and I can't seem to find interest in a new computer.

Basically, I'd rather have an El Capistan than El Capitan, but what the heck.

Don't know if this will help, I've been trying to find out if Adobe Photoshop 6 will work w/ El Capitan and came across this info concerning Java (SE 6). Looks promising for me.

But I'll upgrade on my MacBook first and see how it goes.

Just upgraded my iMac ( mid 2010 ) to El Capitan. I warned me that Photoshop CS2 and Adobe updater would not work because it was a PowerPC app? I figure I'll find another way to do photoshop. Everything else seems OK including Word & Excel (2011). My iTunes playlists etc were intact. iPhoto folders all gone. Safari bookmarks all there except in different places. So there are a few adjustments but so far not too bad.

There are significant version changes for applications Mac or Windows when you move to up to date OS and hardware.

There are great alternatives to programs you may have used for years. Many who are forced with a Photoshop upgrade find Lightroom is really ideal for most of their photo management. The Apple productivity apps are good and you you might not need MS Office. That said, the latest MS Office apps are very good and especially good if you use the mobile versions and hybrid mix of the desktop programs with cloud and mobile.

One really sweet bit with latest Microsoft office is you can have your work with an enterprise version, your family having 5 users in your own domain, and also use other cloud services with it. Put another way move around in work, your own and Dropbox etc.....

Make sure you have Time Machine set up and working, and especially as you adjust and learn so you can do a fast and easy restore if needed.

The latest OS version is a really nice performance boost for quite a few models compared to past few versions. It put new life in our older laptop.

Good luck!

Upgraded without a problem, except that I needed to backup and reformat my backup external HD to perform a Time Machine backup. I had a number of iWork 09 keynote files that would not open in Yosemite, and now open in El Capitan.

I upgraded maybe 3 weeks ago I didn't think to check to see if it was compatible with Pro-Tools and my plugins, it wasn't. Ended up having to take it to tech having the hard drive wiped clean reinstall Mavericks, spent at least 12 hours reloading programs total pain. The bad part I new better. So if you're thinking of upgrading to El Captain check for compatibility. I'm running pro tools 9 Mavericks is the highest up grade I can do. Not sure if PT supports El-Captain yet. I also ended up buying an external hard drive for my Mac. I do have another Mac most my stuff is on it.
I would also like to add: I notice a others with the 27” Mac shortly after getting my computer back it started shutting down on it’s own, blue screen sometimes just lines eventually went to black screen would not start. Doing web search I found that the some 2011 & 2012 27” Macs had a faulty video card the symptoms were what was happening to me. So I took it in after they checked it out it was the video card $266. I asked about the bad video card they ran my serial number price went to $0.00 but I had to ask and I did mention it when I brought it in. So just a heads up.

well, I just got a note from Apogee that my firewire Duet is no longer supported under El Capitan so I guess I won't be installing it soon. Bummer.

Interesting. I use the Apogee One, and I am having no issues. Weird that one of those products would have compatibility issues but not the other.

Rather than upgrade the OS in my old white Macbook (still on Snow Leopard), I've bought a used 15" Macbook Pro with 16GB of RAM, a 1TB SSHD and a clean install of El Capitan, which soon updated itself to 10.11.1. It's enabled me to upgrade to QuarkXPress 2015, while I had to install the legacy Java SE 6 runtime in order to use Adobe CS6, but it works now.

Some features take a little getting used to after Snow Leopard, but no problems at all so far.

For w3stie and others looking for Photoshop/Illustrator alternatives, check out Affinity Photo and Affinity Designer. They come from Serif, who've been leaders in graphics apps for PC for years. Remarkably low-cost, seemingly extremely capable and well worth a look. They're also currently developing Affinity Publisher, a page-layout app that will compete head-on with InDesign; it's due out in 2016. I was an early beta-tester of PagePlus many years and versions ago and if it's of the same quality as that, or better, it'll be a winner.

Thanks for the heads up on photoshop alternatives. Will have to check out those options. Re Time Machine, I've backed up to my external HD - haven't tried a restore yet. I assume backup can be configured to go to the cloud?

A shot of El Capitan by Ansel Adams. I've only ever seen the USA in images, but if I ever get over there, Yosemite will be my nr 1 destination.
