I am working on this P90 guitar. Technically it's a Stratocaster but has a slab sided body like a Tele so I posted it here. It is a cherry body with a Chechen top. The neck is Cherry with a Chechen fingerboard though the board is much darker than the body.

I didn't like the plain cherry headstock and had some similar looking Shedua veneer so I laminated it on the headstock. It didn't look quite right so I added some character lines to the grain and thought I was done but the wood looks more like mahogany with its open pores.

I found another piece of Chechen veneer tucked away that I forgot about. It looks more natural than my stain pen creation but the size of grain bothers me a bit on the small headstock area.

Let me know what you think. Is it worth sanding the old veneer off and replacing it with the Chechen or just leave it as-is?

Go with the Chechen veneer. Looks good — bold, but good!

Keep it as is, it's a nag to make a proper joint in the curve :)

Beautiful guitar. I'm jealous. My woodworking skills/aesthetic tastes involve using a screwdriver as a chisel and covering finish scratches with nail polish and Mighty Mouse stickers, so take this for what it's worth: I prefer the Chechen.

It looks good as is! Nice work.

Once you get a finish on the body and headstock it will match even more.

I think the Chechen matches the body better, but I imagine when the necks actually on the guitar you’d never notice any real difference - so why fix something that ain’t broke?

I say leave it as is. It already looks good and you can save the veneer for another

Use which you prefer, but keep in mind that the headstock is a foot and a half away from the body, so if honestly, either one will look pretty good. Blending veneer into the curve is the biggest challenge, IMHO.

First one looks a good match for me.... once it's finished and tuners/strings/any logo are on there you won't have a clear look at the wood grains anyway... less work, too ;)

They both look great. I think they're so similar, you'll never notice once it's all assembled. My nod goes to the second one, barely. They're both beautiful.

Veneer by a hair, but if the other is already done and on, leave it. Guitar looks beautiful.

Another “leave it” country heard from, here.

Hope to see that completed! Looks really nice.

The nays have it! I will leave well enough alone and not make more work for myself. I tend to obsess over things like this and get a bit carried away.

    Thanks all!
