It's funny how fender started out with the blackguards but a black pickguard Stratocaster wasn't available until the mid 70's.

When I got my white-on-white Tele, I LOVED it matching and HATED pickguards that contrasted. . . I've since done a 180o and have a black single-ply (!!!) on my Tele!
