A wiener or frankfurter without a bun isn't a sandwich. With a bun, it's not a sandwich EITHER.

Is a hamburger ever called a sandwich?

Hot Dog is a nickname coming from sales at baseball stadiums. It started with one team, but I forget the story/history behind it.

    Yes, Burger is a sandwich.

And a hoagie is a sandwich, too.

If you hold it with one hand and eat it from the side, it ain't a sandwich. If you hold it with both hands and bite it in the middle, it is!

Burger King routinely advertises "Get 2 Whopper sandwiches for $6". I remember this because I recall talking to the TV saying something like "Those are burgers. Why the hell are they calling them sandwiches?"

Because I was wrong that's why.

Also, what about kolachies? Yeah, I never heard of them before moving down here either, but they do exist:

    Are these sandwiches?

I think technically it is, but it is not colloquially regarded as such.

This is a very important discussion. Someone please message me when you've announced the definitive answer. I would offer an opinion...but I don't have the time to read all the replies to ketchup, and just can't mustard the interest to have one.

One would hope it's a steer sandwich, not cow.

My Grandma used to call them a "Wiener Sandwich": Split, fried in a skillet, with a slice of cheddar and fried chopped onions on toast .... still eat 'em like that to this day when nostalgia strikes :D

I'm from Frankfurt and quite sure, that the Frankfurters were the original thing. When folks from Vienna copied it they named their version 'Wiener Würstchen'.
A Frankfurter Frankfurter to my mind tastes a little bit more substantial but is basically the same as a Wiener Wiener.

I thought a sandwich is anything "sandwiched" with bread that you eat with your hands?
