He appears to have his pickup switch in the neck position -and the neck pickup cover removed (and really, I'm sure that's not even stock pickups).

Prince has been using Kinman pickups for a couple of years now, they replace the rather noisy stock Hohner pickups

While we're on the subject: The live recording that was the base for the single Purple Rain. Later edited down for the record.

That was one of the first times they performed that song live but it was not the one they used for the movie.

From what I found out they played it during a show where it was recorded and filmed and they later spliced real footage of that gig with the movie footage for that song, the "If Y'all understand me, raise your hands" and the feedback from his guitar are give aways, since they are not there in that clip you posted.

Prince used his Custom "Cloud" guitar on that song and you can tell by how different it sounds from his Hohner.

To me, what he does at 2:03 is the reason why he's an artist while others are musicians.

Stopping playing, picking up the entire mike stand and screaming like he just stepped on a lit cigarette butt at the beach?

Yes. Letting his emotions surface in the form of a wild scream not minding anything else, to me, is a proof that the artist prevails on the musician.

I never tire of listening to good players set their Telecasters ablaze on stage. Prince is kind of a reliable source of that kind of thing. He's easily in my top ten favorite players.

I knew it the second I heard him. All my buds were into punk rock and metal and thought I was nuts. They're not laughing now.

Prince starts around 3:30 -not really sure it's the "best guitar solo EVER", though.

I see that Tom Petty's best buddy, Jeff Lynne, was right up there with them...

A lot can be said about this video...probably the best live version of this tune ever..Pettys vocals were perfect and Lynn on top with his Falsetto was brilliant. The guitar playin was nothing short of studio quality all the way around..even at the end with all the ad-lib from Prince. Lots of Telent in that video..they would do well to jam again on a frequent basis
