Would it be OK to use (link removed)
I've been reading that there might be some compatibility issues with using certain clear coats. Is there any other compatibility issues with other products(grain filler, sanding sealer).?

I've used Krylon black Fusion (for plastic) over McFaddens mahogany grain filler on wood. Then sprayed McFadden clear nitro lacquer clear coats. Excellent results.

Make sure your Krylon is a lacquer product. I think the one you are citing is lacquer. (It dries in 10 minutes.)

No such fast drying claim can be made regarding any enamel paints. Enamel requires an hour or more for similar hardness.

That is the new formula krylon, and it is indeed enamel paint. I know this from experience as I used to finish exclusively in the lacquer version of this paint. I nearly cried when they switched formulas, and discovered it by a combination of shooting the new stuff over the old(bad juju, there) and coming here to this board. There are numerous discussions of this here. All it takes is a little searching( never thought I'd "hear" mayself say that, and no offense intended by it).

Also, if you read the label of this paint it will tell you it is enamel. The old stuff said"dries in 12 minutes", the new stuff says "dries in 10 minutes". You can use it, and a lot of guys do. But it is an enamel paint, and I have no clue what you'd use as a clearcoat for it.
As an aside, I intended to switch to Duplicolor lacquers, available at the local auto parts stores, but all of them are clearing out their stock and switching over to enamel paints, at least here locally. So I have no idea what I'm gonna do for color coats, as I will not pay reranch prices, nor wait on their shipping. For clear there's always Deft here at Lowes, but for color coats I've gotta figure out something else. Oh well, I'm thinking it's compressor time.

Yup, that stuff is enamel. I just finished a guitar with Pistachio a few days ago. Sprayed some lacquer sanding sealer. It started peeling like crazy. I was heartbroken. That last time I used Krylon was a few years ago, and it worked beatifully with Nitro.

Just about to the point where if you could find the old Krylon, it'd be sketchy trying to use it because the propellant might be partially depleted or something else bad may have set in inside the rattle can.

Meaning, when you see rattle cans on super closeout, check the date and be prepared to use them right away or pass them up. They don't get better with time.

This new krylon enamel I used wet sanded down and had a great satin finish. but bondo, grainfiller, sanding sealer and nitro melt it. damn. These new krylon colors are beautiful though. I'm probably going to use a waterbase poly buffer coat.

Could you describe the process you'd use for a water based poly coat. I'm guessing that would isolate the wood from everything else you applied after? Does that stuff come in aerosol or spray gun only? Thanks

I am looking into pigments and start making my own color using clear lacquer.

I suggest you look into the woodworking literature - "Fine Woodworking" magazine, among others. Those guys are head and shoulders above most of us in terms of their knowledge of finishing products.

If you look at the various finishing product companies (e.g., General Finishes), you'll find all kinds of stuff on adding coloring agents to clear finishing material.

The purpose for the water based poly is to seperate Lacquer and Enamel. If those two substances come into the contact the paint will whither and create wrinkles and delaminate.

Dconeill - Thanks for the suggestion. I actually have a subscription, and have joined a few dedicated wood working forums. I think woodcrafters has some stuff I am going to invest in.

If you try to join any other group or forums, non guitar related, and try to shout the praises of Nitro, they will not only disagree but laugh at you, that is if they even now the difference. hehe

I did the same thing-- it ended up looking like one of those reddish brown fridges from the 70's. Sad thing is, I wanted it to look like that

It's possible to spray lacquer over krylon. I've done it several times. The trick is to let the krylon dry for about 48 hours. Make sure the last coat is as smooth as possiblel You don't want to sand the color coat in any way. Then you have to mist on the first 4-6 coats of nitro. It gradually builds up a layer, but it wastes alot of product. Once that layer is built up you can gradually begin spraying wetter coats. It works, but it's kind of a pain. Then again some of those krylon colors are just irresistible.

And sometimes the Diva demands pink and krylon is your only option.

I have the same question, what is the Krylon clear? Seems like it should work with the other Krylon products. Has anyone tried it yet?

Krylon makes Acrylic and enamel clear. I imagine krylon clear is enamel, that way there are no compatibillity issues.

The acrylic is clearly labeled.
