Oh yeah, my next gig isn’t until April up at the winery and brewery near Alexandria, MN
Not that I know of, anyway. Getting together with a new musician pal this weekend to see about a place in his funk combo, so hopefully I can pick up a couple gigs before spring.

When I was a kid first taking up the guitar I took to it pretty quickly. I was pretty happy with my progress, never learning to read music, just slugging it out in my bedroom "moving the needle back" to learn from records. Then I started playing in bands during high school. My family said I was good, my friends said I was good, so I figured "Hey, I'm good!".

I started playing local clubs feeling very excited, and confidant in my skills. Then, THEN one night I went out to see a local RI band circa 1975. They were playing the type of music I loved, and more. They had two guitars players, both very, very good. Well, after seeing them on that first night I realized that I knew NOTHING, and had to go home and start working really, really hard. I loved that band and the members became my friends, and years later I got to start playing with a number of them in different outfits. In fact one of them has been in my band since 2014.

Long story short, my next gig is Sunday and I'll be doing a set with the trio I started with all those years ago in the mid 70s opening for my friends in the very band that set the standard for me. I'm really looking forward to seeing them all together again.

I'll be using my new Recording King Series 11 Dread, a Senn E945, and my guitar cord.

When you said Rhode Island, I couldn't help wonder: Roomful?

They sure set a high mark for me.

Friday I'll be on bass with the trio at our local winery. It's a fun little low volume gig. Keeping it simple with the Am Elite Jazz bass and GK MB-112.

Saturday I'm playing a duo gig at a downtown eatery with my buddy Benny. Haven't decided whether I'm taking the Gibson LG-1 or the Yamaha FG-351. In either case I'll run straight to the board and into the Bose L1.

I picked up a bass gig Friday at Donn’s Depot this Friday, the 10th.
I’m looking forward to it because I’ll be playing with the regular Thursday night band (duo) Murphy’s In-Laws, with the addition of Chip Dolan, on keys and vocals.
Great players and singers, all!
I’ve played guitar several times with Chip, but never played bass with any of em’.
Should be fun!
I’ll use my Daion, and P basses into my trusty old Traynor Block 80 amp.
I may rent a bigger amp.
I really need to buy one.
We’ll see.

This Saturday-

Alt/Classic country with a couple of guys that came up in the 70’s and early 80’s Cle-punk scene. We have a lot of fun.

I’ll take my Gretsch Silver Jet, and my DiMarzio loaded HH Tele. I’ll plug them into my pedalboard, which I will plug into my new (to me) Budda Superdrive 18 combo with an HOF Mini in the loop.

I’ll also tote along a mic, stand, and cable since I sing half the tunes.

Tomorrow night. Playing just 3 songs. A big gig, 15 bands altogether. No time for soundcheck. FOH/monitor/lighting services in situ. Ops hardware: MIM Tele Deluxe, cable, tuner. Plan of action: 2 songs on bridge PU playing rhythm only, 1 song on neck PU doing fills and a short solo. Remarks: will have to adjust amp on the fly, gotta be careful with the EQ, will have to keep it all simple on account of not knowing how I will sound.

After this afternoon, my next one (two, actually) are with my old friends Lamar and Rueben, at two different senior living complexes, on Friday, the 17th.
Lamar (keys, guitar, great voice) and Rueben (big band leader/drummer) are the two most accomplished musicians I regularly play with.
I’m going to play my Cabronita, and my new to me Epi Riviera.
It’s always a joy, with those guys!

Tell me about your Epi Riviera. I used to play an Epi Riviera back in the mid to late 60's. I wish so badly that I still had it. I was young and dumb and traded it off for a new Fender Coronado Wildwood.....a trade that I immediately regretted.

Mine is a very recently acquired 2021 model.
I’ve always liked the model, and owned two 12 strings in my youth.
They’re bright and clear sounding, compared to other humbucking pickup semi-hollow guitars.
I enjoy playing it, and the Bigsby/roller bridge combination works really well.
Here it is.

Your Epi is beautiful. Mine had a factory-installed Bigsby on it too. I remember the mini-buckers were exactly as you described. Okay, now I have to find one and check them out. I definitely want another. Thanks for the pic and description. Much appreciated!

Tonight I'm on bass at my favorite neighborhood pub for blues night. I just bring the Jazz bass and GK-MB112. It's generally a great gig with some great players; two guitarists, keys, 3 piece horn section, bass and drums.

Saturday I kick off a songwriters seminar at our local music conservatory. It's a 2 day event with 10 regional artists. I'll play one 45 minute set with my LG1 and probably end up talking through a third of my time on stage. I'm looking forward to it. Should be fun!
