We often say, "no one else could have played that role." In reality.... yeah, actually, lots of actors probably could have played that role.

    That said...

Hard for me to imagine anyone but Tom Hanks in "Forrest Gump."

But another role he did a stellar job in, "Cast Away..." I actually think someone else could have done that role justice. I'm not going to say just yet--I want to know if others feel someone else could have, and if so-- Who??

Who do you think could have replaced an actor in an iconic role?

Here's a couple of my thoughts:

Travolta was great in "Pulp Fiction But I think Brad Pitt could have handled that role. Good actor, good looking, has that cool charisma that comes across well on screen. Can be edgy too. Samuel L's role? Naw, only Samuel L could have been Jules (in my opinion).

James Gandolfini--who I adored--was set to play the attorney in "The Night Of." (for any of you who haven't seen this short mini series, go watch it NOW) I cannot imagine him in that role. But he was a great actor, maybe he coulda pulled it off. (John Turturro was brilliant in the role)

Do you have thoughts on an actor who could have filled in admirably??

Matthew McConaughey: he's got a goofy side, but he also has some real acting chops.

I always thought that Susan Sorrandon and Leslie Anne Warren could have played sisters in any movie

I recall reading that Danny Devito passed on the Wallace Shawn role in The Princess Bride. I find it totally conceivable that he could have pulled it off.

    nope

Micheal Keaton could have played Batman in those three movies in the nineties. ;)

I think Bill Murray would’ve been great in Castaway.

Reminds me of the old discussion about "Raiders of the Lost Ark". The lead role was originally offerred to Tom Selleck, but his tv contract didn't allow him to do it. Would he have been able to pull off Indiana Jones as well as Harrison Ford?

Other iconic substitutions would be James Arness as Matt Dillon after John Wayne had to turn down the role or even my favorite change....Clint Eastwood as Dirty Harry after they fired Frank Sinatra from the lead role because he couldn't hold that heavy gun without shaking.

I've often thought Nicholas Cage could play quite a few of Jimmy Stewart's parts.

And not an actor, but my Grandfathers role in WW2 ,a crusty old sea captain in the merchant navy, (Atlantic and Russian convoys), could be played by Russel Crowe

I saw an interview with James L. Brooks who said he once won and argument over who was the better actor between Dustin Hoffman and Jack Nicholson. The other guy conceded when Brooks said that Nicholson could have nailed either role in The Odd Couple.

albert brooks and super dave osborne are brothers. In person, they look alike, act alike and are very much brothers. (or were) they went completely different comedic paths in their careers and both did well. They could have flipped and both would have done great.

Robert Duvall played Boo Radley, Tom Hagen, Gus McCrae, and Mac Sledge. He could play anything and anyone and be fantastic.

edward norton would have brought a completely different energy to Gump, but I think he would have been closer to the book and not quite so corny.

nicholson would have been great in castaway (neither film, to me, is particularly great.)

But could Hanks have played all of Duvall's roles? not a chance.

Could Hanks have done American History X? Not even.

Meryl Streep would have been pushing the age limit at that time (for a pregnant officer) but I think she could've pulled it off.

I think Russell Crowe would have done a fine job in the Tom Hanks role in "Castaway."
