He's incredible. I saw him last year (sitting front row centre) and it was a lot of fun, and just amazing.

Live in Los Angeles….Check out the intro into “I’ll Be Seeing You”…sick chops:

Love this recording, and would've killed to be in that room. I saw him last spring in Madison in a really intimate room. He was playing through a Deluxe Reverb reissue with a Cannabis Rex, and his sound and touch were incredible as always, but I really think there was something uniquely magical about his Tele-straight-into-Champ phase.

Oh Julian is truly special! For a while now I can’t listen to any other music but his and Frisell’s.

I have Julian’s albums on repeat!

Well I can play all those notes, just not in that particular order.

Seriously, no matter what "notes" he plays his tone is to die for. Even on a YouTube video it comes through and sometimes listening to one of his albums I'll just loop a single song half a dozen times because I don't want to let go of a particular sound he's making.

Well said.

I could not be less of a jazz guy, but Julian’s tone is other worldly.

For some reason I’m not into his Love Hurts and Squint albums. Not sure why. Taste is a strange thing.

I can understand Love Hurts... but I think Squint is remarkable! But to each their own, and those albums you mentioned are great, too.

Each to their own. I’ve never liked that “jazz tone”. He seems like a wonderfully dynamic player but so many dynamics are lost with that dull tone that inherently squishes/loses the front of the note.

Then again jazz I enjoy is about interplay of instruments, tempos and ideas. This seems like a lot of playing rapid scale runs. I’ve heard some things he’s done with Nels Cline that I enjoy more. But that’s just my personal taste.

Not Squint??

I love his rendition of "Emily". When I saw him last year, he played that one and did a similarly improv'd intro that was just breathtaking. I bought a ticket to the masterclass as well and ended up not being able to get off work in time, so I let my kid brother (also a guitarist) use it and he had nothing but great things to say about Julian as a person and as a teacher.

Highly recommend checking this podcast out. He just has so much practical advice and such a refreshingly laid-back attitude for a jazz guy.

Categorizing him as "jazz" or something else, like talking about his "tone" separate from his note choice and phrasing seems to me utterly wrong-headed and to miss the music in favor of ideas, which is always a step in the wrong direction. Ditto with the song-by-song likes and dislikes. Isn't is best to take his music in the present and engage in whatever he's doing, rather than adopting a picky mindset narrowing it down to personal preferences consistent with our individual and far more limited likes and dislikes? What's not to love?
