So I ordered a new body for a build. I had a old Mighty mite neck I pulled out for it. Been working on a relic job all day. Oh boy oh boy.

Now I get there’s a “stigma” or “relic haters” I don’t care for none of that. We can play nice.

But I’ve reliced before. With actually pretty good success. But this damned maple fretboard. Hahaha. I didn’t want a trash look (yea. That’s foreshadowing) I don’t want a trashed look. So I carefully sanded back a few areas. Scrapped a few others. Mapped out some chords and what not.

I wanted a light dingy color. And read COFFEE! oh my. It backfired. Haha. I’m trying to sand back what I can. You can see some of the area I worked on finger wear. That looks good. But the rest. Man. I’ll keep you posted. But may have to order a new neck lol.

My first build was a relic and turned out AMAZING (if you like relics.)

I think the maple is just unforgiving. I’m working on scraping some back. Gonna use some mineral spirits. Try to see what I can do. Hope for the best. Expect to buy a new one lol.

It was going well. You can see the “finger play wear” I was pleased with that. Figured a coffee stain would just kind of yellow, amber it more. Very surprised.

I'm generally not in the relic camp, but I congratulate you on the soft touch you used on the wood parts in particular. Very subtle. Not at all like the angle-grinder work I've seen from time to time. Nicely done!

Hard to picture. Some pics it looks perfect. Others it’s still a tad heavy. But in person it’s a very happy medium.

I like it now. It’s that darkened aged concept I wanted. Not trying to scrape my fretboard to hell. Haha. Just darken it and make it match the “played” body.

To be fair the neck is used. I got it for a hell of a deal. I guess the previous owner tried to file the fret ends and had no idea what he was doing and it was a mess. So no telling what he may have done. I’ve seen some nice coffee stains. So figured I’d try it.

I don’t have original pics. But I can take pics of the damage he did that I’ve smoothed out as much as possible.

Like I said. It was rough. I’ve smoothed them out and think they are ok. But there were big divots where he I guess used a bigger file? Idk. But for $50 I figured I could salvage it. Taken a lot of work. Then fixing my coffee idea
