Hey folks, throwing an introduction out there. I wanted to put this here instead of in my first post in the DIY area, so that people wouldn’t have to wade through a more or less off topic introduction.
First I’d like to say, thanks for an amazing community here. I spend 98% of my time on this site in the DIY area, and man what a friendly community. No gate-keeping, just encouragement. Everyone seems to obey my mother’s rule of “if it’s not nice don’t bother saying it”. I’m amazed by the talent and information freely shared here.
I’m an average Joe. High school education. Apartment dweller. I work a 50-60 hour a week job, decent salary for my area, and am not quite 30. I’ve been playing guitar, bass, drums, and keyboard for the last 13 years, although you would probably think I started yesterday if you heard me play. Music, of all types, is the overarching passion of my life. I know by now that won’t ever go away, it’s ingrained.
I’m here for the amazing builds and partscaster threads. I’m literally obsessed with the goal of building my own guitars. I have no illusions of costs, for the tools and time I’ve invested, I could own multiple fender custom shop guitars, or that beautiful 1963 Martin in the shop near me. I want to do it for the enjoyment of learning to create and build something that has brought me joy for most of my life. For the last 6 months building has completely consumed my spare time, in reading, planning, and practicing. I’m a really slow mover, I observed my dad taking months on a seemingly simple decision or task and now I understand why. I spend as much time as I can absorbing information before taking action. I’m finally at the taking action stage.
I’ve never owned a Tele, so I started with a StewMac Kit (the guitar in my profile picture). It still has flaws, but it’s a decent guitar. The only thing I kept from the kit was the wood, I realized I didn’t enjoy the lower end electronics and tuners. After I completed it I decided it was time to move toward scratch building. That’s where I’m at today, throwing rocks at a piece of wood hoping I guitar suddenly pops out of it.
I have a a few other guitars, acoustic and electric. Gibson, offbrand, no brand, new, used. I love them all and they all have their place.
Thanks everyone, I know introductions are inherently selfish in nature, but I do hope to be able to learn, share, and encourage others in this community. I struggle to find people of the same interest in my area, so I’m looking forward to being able to have some camaraderie with like minded people.
Thanks, John.
