So a good buddy of mine brought me his old guitar to see if I could fix his neck. Apparently it got knocked over and has a little crack. So when get looking at it the neck is broken almost all the through at the headstock. Closer inspection revealed that a few of the frets have some bad spots as well. After some discussion we decided to just make a new neck for it as it is a bolt on and shouldn't be too difficult. The guitar in question is his old Harmony flying V, that he used to play in his old punk band. He plans on doing something weird with the body paint scheme so he wants an off the wall looking neck to go with it, something unique. This is what I came up with. 20191111_204028.jpg

Well I had a slip with my saw and ended up with a crooked slot. I decided I could salvage this fretboard, luckily i didn't cut it very deep yet. I decided to pick up a 0.022" end mill and cut the slots on my milling machine. I managed to cut all 22 slots without breaking a cutter, .002" at a time. People tell me I have more patience than brains. 20191205_202655.jpg

I use a .022" end mill for cutting fret slots and after having a conversation with Ron at PreciseBits, I kicked the speeds and feeds up a bit...to my surprise, the little cutter handles it very well at 24ips at 18K RPM with five passes to a total of 2mm depth on my CNC. So as long as your milling machine's movement is consistent, I don't think you'll have any issues using that method to cut the slots if you want or need to use it.

Forgot to mention I am feeding by hand and my mill maxes out at 2000 rpm. I am really surprised I sisnt break a cutter.

At 1.808" wide this is hands down the widest neck I have built. My friend that I am making it for has huge hands and doesn't find most electric guitars comfortable to play. This one at around 1 13/16" should be more to has liking. It will probably be close to an inch thick as well, "we cant stop here this is bat country." 20191206_213601.jpg
