    Best period for metal IMO

    http://ultimateclassicrock.com/new-wave-of-british-heavy-metal/

Gotta love a movement that is far-ranging enough to encompass both Venom and Def Leppard

What are some of your fave NWOBHM bands? Or maybe just metal bands of that era who weren't necessarily NWOBHM ...

I'll start by stating the obvious, Priest and Maiden were stellar standouts of NWOBHM

They'd been around a while by then but the best bands I saw in that era were Nazareth and UFO. Good times...

The new wave of British heavy metal reflected a metal movement that took one idea from punk: a diy ethic. The first band is considered to be Motörhead though Slade or Saxon have a claim. Newer bands like iron maiden or Judas Priest (by 'new' we mean late 70s) fall into this category.

Motorhead, Iron Maiden, and Judas Priest would be my standouts from the period.

    Edit: typo

I rode that wave; I was the perfect age for it - 16 in '79. Priest, Iron Maiden, Scorpions, UFO, Rainbow. I agree, it's my favorite metal. I still play along to Lovedrive sometimes. I can rock Another Piece of Meat like nobody's business.

To me it's where metal begins. Sabbath and purple are great as are the others. But NWOBHM removes the blues and it becomes something new. No accident that MTV starts a few years later and the whole thing explodes.

My period too. About the only time Motorhead could make the popular music charts. I think Ace of Spades was a no1 or close. Could never happen today.

A long time friend of mine from that period was a zep and maiden freak. Obsessive. Camped outside Page's house near Windsor for 2 days to get a 5min interview for a fanzine. I see him now on facebook with his dream job - booking celebs for motivational speaking. Dickinson is on their client list, he meets him regularly, and pinches himself every time. Has even been on board their 747.
