So building my first tele and have made my first mistake - I cut the fret nut slot about 1/2 mm too wide.
What do people do if this happens? Glue and sawdust?

Put a little shim in there or the sawdust and glue should work

Make a wider nut.. filler will stick out like a sore thumb. A sliver of wood with the grain going in the same direction as the neck wood ( end grain) would be better but harder to do, and you'd still see a glue line.... make a wider nut.

Have you bought a nut yet?

I agree with Marty aka @guitarbuilder, cut a new nut from a blank and you're good to go.

I've got some nut blanks you could try. Let me know what the width of your nut slot and I can send you one.

Make nuts is the fun part and I find it very therapeutic and relaxing. :)

hopefully the excess part of the cut is on the tuner side. otherwise you will have to make a filler strip of some kind of weirdo nut

LSR Roller nut takes a wider slot on the string side.
