I'm fairly certain Fender used those in the seventies, but I think most felt they were kinda cheap in comparison to the barrel knobs so they didn't last. Speaking for myself at my age I can't see those little white numbers while playing. They seem to disappear under stage lights. (especially red)

Hard/impossible to do swells with those too, if that makes any difference to you.

I love my Muddy knobs...

That is a statement that, when made to a Tele player, would be understood immediately.

When made to a non-player, it just would get you a confused (and slightly disgusted) look.

That's the main drawback for me if I go to Witch Hat knobs.

Ideally, I'd like Gibson style speed knobs with pointers. I could probably feel where I need to be, especially if I notched the knobs to line up with the pointer at 1 or 2 specific spots. I think I've seen speed knobs with set screws...

not a very good picture, but I have regular speed knobs on mine:

no real need for a pointer for the volume because it lines up with the pickup selector screw.

You could always just label yours yourself, especially if you have certain settings for parts/songs. Would be the easiest thing to do. But with changing knobs the pot shafts might cause an issue, being that metal domes use the solid shafts and Gibson/strat style knobs use the split shafts.

What I did was put a mark each knob with punch to give me a reference point. On a custom build , I used Gretsch knobs which have an arrow like tail in the "G" which provides me a marker. This works well also. Keep in mind, when playing a gig , I can't really look down and adjust by ear.

If you want to use the Gibson style knobs all you have to do it replace your pots with splined pots.

A friend of mine took a small center punch and put a small dot / dent on the edge of the dome. Then he took some red nail polish and filled the hole he'd punched. So now you have an indicator on the tops of the knobs

I use the set screw as my indicator, not super accurate but better than nothing and keeping it stock ........

Can't you just use a dremel or grinder & put a notch into the stock knob? It will give you a visual and physical focal point. You can line up the notch with the pickup selector when the volume in on say 10...

Yup, that's the way I do it too. Turned all the way up, I have the hole pointing towards the neck. That way I can see where it is as I start to roll off tone or volume.

I installed the knob so that when it points straight-up at my head it's in the '"sweet-spot" that I like on either p/u - or within a minor move.
