For some reason my wife has always tried to get me on board to do the (mating ritual) in a open field of grass...

I have respectfully declined every single time...

I could just imagine the rash I would get and where I would get it...

Get her to spray plenty of mosquito repellent on your butt and give it a try.
Sorry!!!

A child of the late 60's and early 70's doesn't have to be asked twice to strip down and just hang. Moonlight, a freshwater lake or river and bunch of humans can have some pretty good fun without going hell.

Most people go through some form of experimentation with nudity in mixed company and the lucky ones enjoy it and move on.

Unfortunately, after the werewolf encounter I wake up nude in the woods about once a month or so...

I read a lot. I won't read books with nudity or explicit sexual content or descriptions of horrendous crimes.

To me it's weird stuff. I only get naked around someone of the opposite sex I care about.

I'm not saying I haven't committed certain acts in the woods. I just wouldn't get descriptive about explaining it.

A touch of class is the difference between a great book and complete garbage.

I don't know about your subject, or how our thoughts apply to your writing NON-fiction.

In my life, nakedness mostly also involves privacy, either in the context of being alone, or with my girl. Aside from being with a partner, nakedness is mere convenience. A comfortable way to sleep, to shower. I don't feel the need to hang out without clothing.

But I did participate in Naked Hiking Day on the AT, when I was thru-hiking. Just a few hours (sunburn was a real concern).

And I did shuck the duds for a while when I stumbled on a nude community bathing area, while in search of a place to swim. This was in a magical spot deep in the redwoods near Mendocino, on the bank of the lazy Big River.

Oh yeah, then there was that crazy GF who liked to take a hot shower together, and then drag me outside and roll in the snow. Good times!

I've done a few nudist-things in my younger days, in Oregon and California. It didn't seem all that big a deal in the situations I was in / people I was hanging out with. Mostly I just remember good times with friends and recreational substances of various types. Getting to see naked ladies was always nice.
Hanging around naked ALONE in the woods though sounds just weird and jarring, like, what? Why?

Why is it that the people most willing to go naked are the ones you wish wouldn't?
You imagine young nymphs frolicking through a beautiful meadow, in reality it's big bellies, caesarean scars, saggy butts and varicose veins.

If you want fantasy and reality to crash like two approaching trains, take a trip to your local nudist colony.

I spent a lot of time hiking in the mountains of Colorado around Boulder. There were lots of places that you could find naked hikers usually up around Boulder Falls.

Some things are best thought about and not actually done.

It's that little period between transition when you're becoming aware that you are a man, and when you find yourself smelling the bushes for a good place to make water, that's a little difficult to deal with.

Hanging out by a lake or quarry naked is nice though, I used to do that a lot with mixed company.

A quarry? Is it something about the heavy machinery?? Or the men in hardhats? Not that there's anything wrong with that.

It's kind of weird, but not terribly.

If this a non-fiction story, how do anecdotes from others help?

anecdotes might contain some small and telling useful detail i've never thought of. the person i'm writing about didn't give much in the way of detail.

so the answer i'm getting is it's maybe not all that unusual.

To the original topic, I recommend you read Reflections In A Golden Eye, by Carson McCullers.

I won't give anything away, just recommending a fine read.

A fairly good movie was made from the book, in 1967, staring Marlon Brando, Elizabeth Taylor, Brian Keith, Julie Harris, and (to the point of being naked in the woods) a young Robert Forster.

Good stuff.

Leaving any cultural differences out of it, I spent too much time in the woods with my clothes on to want to be there with them off. Lots of ways in the woods to damage your, um, "essential parts".

Seeing a man running through the woods naked would put a damper on a nature hike. Definitely not the twig and berries I had in mind when I set out on this trek.

Mostly nude beaches and hot springs in California back in my youth. I had a dream just last night that reflected those days. No one really needs to see me naked these days.

It all depends on if the act of him doing that is setting something up in the book. Are you trying to define a component of his character in the story? It's not an unusually weird act as far as weird acts go, but if it's not to further develop a component of his character then why include it?
