Ok. I'm up in the middle of a non-fiction writing project. it's going along pretty good, i'm happy to report.
but i have an issue that the mighty TDPRI Brain Trust might be able to help me with. the subject of my story, a man who committed some pretty horrendous crimes, tells that when he was a teenager, he liked to go into the woods near his home at night and take off all his clothes and run around buck nekkid. alone. as far as anybody knows for sure, at this time of his life, he hadn't done anything criminal. (unless being naked in the woods is criminal)

my first question is: how weird, strange and unusual do you think this actually is? do you think it's an urge that lots of people have?

second: how many here have some experience with this? just admit it, get it off your chest. we won't think badly of you. i need your anecdotes.

i'll tell you one thing i know for sure, if you do this in kentucky, you're gonna need an ocean of calomine lotion.

    what a romantic

like most of us here probably, I spent many hours running through the woods, swinging over the creek on a vine, finding girly mags left behind in rickety treehouses by older boys, and startling deer out of their beds

    but not naked

running through the woods naked as a jaybird takes some aforethought -- not least of which is *where do you leave your clothes*

Uh, have you ever heard of nudist beaches and clubs?

Anyway, the title was amusing... sort of like running into a conference room with a big box of gourmet donuts, and announcing, "This box is empty!":lol:

Used to go skinny dipping in the romantic moonlight, but running around in the woods necked was not my top priority in that endeavor.

I think you can make it work as long as the event in question is a level of foreshadow or you explain the character's motivation really well. Even then it must be believable. A simple defiance of authority or cultural norms isn't going to cut it.

Too damned many briars and way too much poison ivy in the woods where I grew up!

It's kind of weird, but not terribly.

If this a non-fiction story, how do anecdotes from others help?

Yup. Used to do it all the time. Had a girlfriend that just loved being naked. We used to go skinny dipping in broad daylight and then walk for hours in the woods. Ah yes, to be 16 years old again..........

The experience was a little odd at first, and it took time to first get used to being naked outside, and then become comfortable with it. Eventually we would reach a point where we just didn't want to get dressed again.

Someone told me a story that in a nearby small riverside community there was some folks with an ice machine on the front porch. Always seemed a bit low on ice so they put up a game camera. They got photos of two naked guys on a golf cart driving up and filling an ice chest. That needs some back story.

I once played in the snow nekkid. I don't know what inspired me but it was fun.

I think everyone should run around naked, not you guys, but everyone else.

I went to a nudist colony in Germany back in the 80's, one look around and you know why they invented clothes.

For some reason my wife has always tried to get me on board to do the (mating ritual) in a open field of grass...

I have respectfully declined every single time...

I could just imagine the rash I would get and where I would get it...

No but if they have a senior's episode on Naked and Afraid, I might apply. I think the little necklace they all get is pretty cool.

Running naked is kind of like running with scissors.
Hanging out by a lake or quarry naked is nice though, I used to do that a lot with mixed company.
The US seems to view nudity as taboo though, where for example Canadians that come to Maine are more normalized with the human body.
As a result of this, it seems like cool nude swimming places become hangouts for old men who haven't seen a nude young woman recently.
Now that I'm old I stay away from such fun.

So I'd say running through the woods buck nekkid might sound a little odd to many people.
