I’ve got quite a bit of arthritis including what the surgeons call “severe” in both thumbs and I’ve sold off fatter neck stuff over the years, including some stellar guitars. I’d get pretty bad fretting hand thumb pain very quickly from them. Bummer.

Last summer I had a guy work on my very beat old J-45 and he recommended replacing the fretboard on it as it had been planed to at most 1/8” + the radius was nearly flat. I was a bit apprehensive as though I didn’t like the flat board that neck had fit my hand for twenty years, but I OK’d it. When I got it back the new & thicker fretboard made it a much fuller profile and it bothered my thumb a lot. I was tempted to have the same guy plane that neck down, keeping the radius but lopping off a lotta thickness. I just kept playing it instead and made it my main guitar for months and my achy old hand got quite used to it, and now it’s really not any more of a problem than my other guitars. They all hurt a bit but the J-45 is no worse and it’s sitting with me now.

This long story is just to say that with a nice guitar like that give the neck a good long time to see how it really fits you.

Fun time for you, indeed. Very nice! I love Fender guitars - they're great.

Thanks all for the good vibes...unfortunately I will not keep this guitar. The guitar plays wonderfully, the pups are awesome...but two things I dislike about it:

    1) The shelf on the guitar body / neck fitment. I know it is a period correct "feature" but I can't stand it.
    2) The neck is wayyyy to fat to my taste.

What is the shelf you mentioned?

The gap between the body and neck on the right side facing the guitar...[IMG][IMG]

Oh. I see. I'm not much of a vintage-spec fan, so I was unaware of that "feature". I wouldn't enjoy that either - nor a giant-size neck.
