The album “Brujo” by the New Riders featured a song entitled “Singing Cowboy”.
It starts out: “Gene Autry and Roy Rogers were singing cowboy men...”

I have searched the net in vain to find a recording/video of this song. Does anyone have a copy?

No idea, but you just reminded of a song I heard playing on a guy's car one time. And have never been able to find it. It was either an old bluegrass song or a new band doing traditional style. I may post and see if anybody knows based on the few lyrics I know.

you got to hear the song, right?

Singing Cowboy - New Riders of the Purple Sage
    Battin-Fowley

Gene Autry and Roy Rogers were singin' cowboy men
But I can ride as hard and fast and shoot as straight as them
'Cause I'm a singin' cowboy with a guitar in my hand
Yeah, I'm a singin' cowboy and I'm gonna sing again
Yeah, I'm a singin' cowboy and I'm gonna sing again.

I saw the ad in the Rolling Stone
So I called up on the telephone
Hollywood said I could sing a song.

Rode the Greyhound south one day
From Stinson Beach and the Frisco Bay
Hollywood said I could sing that day.

Just like Gene Autry and Roy Rogers, singin' cowboy men
But I can ride as hard and fast and shoot as straight as them
'Cause I'm a singin' cowboy with a guitar in my hand
Yeah, I'm a singin' cowboy and I'm gonna sing again
Yeah, I'm a singin' cowboy and I'm gonna sing again.

I saw the line at the studio
There were guys dressed up like a rodeo
Hollywood said I could sing a song, let's get on with the show.

I sang one song it was very strange
No one liked "Home On The Range"
Hollywood hurt me, it stung like pain, oh didn't it rain?
    Oh didn't it rain?

I rode the Greyhound north today
To Stinson Beach and the Frisco Bay
I don't need no Hollywood, I'm coming home to stay.

Thanks MS, but I was looking for the single track. I have the “Brujo” album, but I was looking for the track to add to my YouTube library.

As much as I like New Riders, I think the band David Nelson put together more recently kills. Really great players, all of them. Especially Pete Sears on bass. Granted, it's not a cowboy croon, but add this to your list.

Jon Molo from the old Range of Bruce Hornsby fame. He also played drums for Phil Lesh from 1998 - 2004 or so. Then he did the John Fogerty tour Down The Road. Keys is Mookie Siegel who has played with David for a long time. He was in Bob Weir's Ratdog for awhile too.

Correction: Fogerty was the Long Road Home Tour from 2005. Which is a great watch! Great band.

Thanks for that info. In '99 I saw Phil and Friends (with Haynes and Trucks) open for Dylan, so I guess I saw Molo without knowing it, or, remembering  David Nelson is a great trooper, the last time I saw NRPS he had to carry the show due to others' illness, and did a fantastic job. A lengthy, mesmerizing Last Lonely Eagle was a standout.
