I treated myself to this as a 40th birthday present, yesterday it finally arrived in the mail. This is a harmonic tremolo pedal by MAS Effects, a one-man operation from Illinois. It's clear from the moment you unbox this that it's made with pride and care. There's a handwritten note of thanks from Mark, beautiful printed box, some fun case candy, and a cloth bag with a drawstring for the pedal itself.
This one is in a limited edition color called Chameleon Sparkle - normally the box is black, but this wasn't any more expensive than the standard version and I'm a sucker for dark green like this. The on/off LED is also normally orange-red, but for this one it's sort of teal.
This pedal is fun. I mean really fun - at it's heart is a lovely harmonic tremolo, with adjustable width and depth parameters. The Warp switch affects the tremolo by adding in sort of a flanger effect.
The Outer Space switch next to it allows you to add in atmospheric reverb in the middle - think hall style but bigger and more echoey. It gets pretty intense turned all the way up, which can be fun if you want to play some real spacey psychedelic jams. In the up position it replaces the reverb with a delay effect for a different flavor of spacey echo.
The really fun thing about it though is the foot switch on the lower left called Vast Expanse. This is an extreme sustain control - step on it and hold and whatever note(s) are currently coming out will swell up to create a huge field of sound. Releasing the switch makes this gently dissipate for a couple of seconds. It's also possible to control a few parameters with an expression pedal, though I haven't tried that out much yet.
I particularly love the sound of this with my neck pickup soloed. Fuzz sounds good with it too but it can get intense pretty quickly too - fortunately there is a blend knob on the pedal to tame it down as needed.
