I recently received, as a gift from a friend, a DOD FX84 Milkbox, one of the original ones I think with the over the top cow vernacular and graphics. As absurdly cool (udder-ly ridiculous) as it looks, it performs equally as well. I have never been much of a compressor fan, especially not the obligatory "squish" most have, but I really like how good and "out of the way" this one sounds while doing its job. Does a great job at retaining the sound while putting a can of whoop on it.

Congrats!

I have the later version with “normal” knob names (and no spots), so you get the bonus points. :D (It *is* an under-appreciated compressor)

Cowabunga! Congrats! Even though the graphics might be considered by some to be a bit cheesy, I bet it makes your tone nice and creamy. The Milk Box might just put some of those other comps out to pasture! I butter quit with the puns now, I've milked it for all it's worth. Happy NPD. (Nicely Processed Dairy)

I had one of those years ago and as I recall it was a good pedal, you don't see many used DOD pedals these days

Woe! That thing’s cool

It came in a series in the mid nineties that have a cult following

With such classics as the “meatbox” and “buzzbox”

Very cool. I remember that series, I had the envelope filter from it when I was a teen.

It’d be fun to try one of those now. Doubt you can get them for $35-40 all day like you used to.

Some people want over 500 for the buzz box

I Don’t think the others are too bad

Greetings from Sunny New Jersey
I have the later version - it can be a bit noisy if you want a light amount of compression. It actually gets a little quieter if you turn up the compression and turn down the level to achieve apparent unity. It really does the sustain thing very well. I especially like the subtle tone shaping that the "hi exp" ("pasteurization") does. It's an expander for upper frequencies - it boosts the highs the harder you hit the strings. Seems a bit counterintuitive for a compressor, but it does add a little sparkle.
I don't use mine at the moment, but I am going to hang on to it as it is a very useful tool.
