Tele-Afflicted
I have a Deep Trip Land Kryptone (Vox Tone Bender), a BOG (Fuzz Face), and now a recently acquired Hellbender (Tone Bender mkii). I love them all.
They’re all tweaked versions of iconic fuzz circuits, not faithful reproductions. They all have Si transistors. They all have treble, bass, and bias controls, in addition to the obligatory volume and fuzz controls. They all work great anywhere in my signal chain. They all sound amazing.
The Hellbender lives up to its name. It’s a high gain beast. Just what I was looking for.
EQ-wise it’s pretty flat. Maybe even a little scooped. I typically run my fuzz pedals into an OD pedal to add some mids and round off the sharp edges. The Hellbender stacks beautifully with an OD, and the tone controls are a Godsend. The bass cut is especially useful with humbuckers.
It can purr, it can roar, it will do everything from smooth to Velcro. It cleans up nicely with the guitar volume too. Not like a Fuzz Face, but still has a good range, and retains the highs. I absolutely love it.
