    Oh it is awful.

I'm watching live pictures. Completely out of control. Collapsed spire. The roof has vanished. The beautiful stained glass windows melted.

Very lucky started as it was just closed.

It's a massive cultural tragedy. Notre Dame is truly iconic. My heart goes out to the French nation. It is devastating.

Ok, I'll rephrase...thankfully it's only a building that only contains material things

Although according to CNN, it's not yet known who was inside and if everyone made it out. I agree, the cathedral, while significant, is just a "thing".

This is heartbreaking. I can't imagine how many years, if not centuries, of blood, sweat and tears Notre Dame represented. My sincerest condolences to mes amis Parisiennes et Francaises aujourd'hui.

Considering that the building closes for public a 6pm, there shouldn’t be much people inside... except there was a major renovation of the roof, so let’s hope workers had time to evacuate the building.

    As a French, it’s heart breaking !

As much as I understand the « it’s just a thing », it is still really sad (tons of art inside, some parts of the roof structure were XII century, windows, etc.)
Just imagine the same with the Lincoln Memorial...

It is about 850 years old.

We are all devastated here in France.

Say you were a cowpoke crossing 100 miles of desert, unbeknownst to you your canteen and saddle bags fell off the horse fifty miles back. Would you suddenly be liberated?
