Steve Vai “Won't Be Able to Play for a While” After Holding a Chord for So Long He Needed Surgery

Steve Vai recently revealed that he had undergone shoulder and trigger finger surgeries in recent months, saying that his shoulder had been "screwed up," but not necessarily revealing why he needed the latter surgery.

As it turns out, Vai sustained that latter injury by, of all things, holding a tough chord for too long.

“I was doing this fun thing, and I had to put my thumb in this really weird position," Vai said during an appearance on Tyler Larson's Guitar Villains podcast.

“And I had to kind of hold this chord really for a long time – I was meditating on it. And I knew it was a hard position, and I just kept sitting there and playing it and playing and playing, and 20 minutes later, I'd kind of come out, and I [felt pain in my hand].

Probably just the first chord he’s played in 30 years.

That situation actually makes the old doctor’s joke a serious recommendation....if it hurts, don’t do it!!

I was talking to two different people about three weeks apart some years back about the mechanics of playing guitar. Both of them responded with almost the same exact words...‘Wally, I am a physical therapist, and everything you are saying is what I was taught from the books!’

I will also observe that the only people who meditate in pain would be masochistic.

Stevie's got a different take on "fun" than I, apparently. What a bummer anyhow... how awful to be at that level of competency/dexterity and have your hand just give out physically. Hope he recovers.

Vai’s playing is more ornate and flashy than I usually go for, with the caveat that some of what he does absolutely floors me.

And every time I’ve read an interview with him, or heard him speak in a video, he came off like a totally pleasant, likeable and down-to-earth guy...who just happens to be this hugely developed guitar monster.

I watched this rig rundown with him recently and listening to how enthusiastic he continued to be about the Ibanez JEM line and his main two or three mainstay ones, I thought it was cool that all this time and playing and he’s still like a happy little kid about it. I was moved by that.

Heal fast and keep at it, Steve! Keep doing your thing and having fun.

If that had been an “Onion” headline, it would have been a funny one, and my sense is that Steve would think so too.

    Lead players...

Just kidding. I wish him the best. I was almost professionally sidelined and had to visit a hand surgeon. A cortisone shot helped me get through a string of gigs, but it could have been worse.

I have other issues from working with machines. I wake up every morning and have to use one hand to un-claw the other.

I do a helluvan Elvira impression, though.

This is why BB King never played chords...it may have been the secret of his longevity.

You can't play Hendrix chords unless you have Hendrix hands.

When newbies complain guitar playing hurts their hands, we always say hang in there, it'll get better.

Now this. Makes me wonder sometimes why we torture our hands.

These days, I feel it whenever I play barre chords throughout a whole song. How many older players suffer hand issues, and is it worth it?
