    Morning,

Yesterday, I purchased a Gretsch 2420T from a mom & pop shop (trying to support them). Thinking it was current, got it home and checked the serial number, it's a 2018. It looks brand new, no box, tags, or protective plastic though. It's my fault for not questioning while at the store, but with this Covid crap, I don't want to be lingering in any retail stores.

I feel stupid, though they did offer a new generic hardshell case for $25 (which I grabbed).

Would you leave it alone, or approach that it's old stock?

    Thanks!

Lots of stock on shelves was not made less than six months prior to purchase.
If it isn't like used/ shopworn it seems fine, unless the latest version got better appointments and the former year is now undesirable?

The only difference, is the pickguard for newer models.

I'm a little concerned about warranty, I should probably confirm the shop indeed sold this to me, as brand new.

    The doll is awesome!

I loved it before checking the serial number. It appears brand new.

As I mentioned, I'm thinking about warranty as well, is it actually brand new?

The question would seem, did they say it was new, or present or imply it as such? They may have not realized you thought it was new if nothing was said by either of you?

Also have you checked if the 2018 model price was any lower than the 2020 price you paid? You'd want to know that before approaching them about it.

I wouldn't worry about price nor warranty. You're the first original owner. Send warranty in the mail or register online. You brought it home so obviously you like it. Might even have a real rosewood fretboard too.

edit...the local brick and mortar music store here has NOS stuff older than '18 in the climate controlled rooms where they keep the premium stuff. And I've never seen them raise the price either. Sometimes they'll even reduce it a little. They still might have a limited edition AV52 Tele w/Korina body. I would have bought it if I already didn't have one.

If it's the same model with the same parts, does it matter?

My new amp I just received yesterday is dated 2019 on the inspection card.

You can look at it as you're already two years closer to it being a vintage instrument.

I’ve never thought about how fresh the inventory is in guitar stores, and I’ve never looked beyond condition, accessories, and shop wear. I have found guitar warranties to be next to useless.

Just tell yourself that you got one of the good ones from back in ‘18, when they were making them right. Repeat this in a few places online here and there, and pretty soon it’ll take on a life of its own. Instant resale value.

Oh, yeah: I love the doll.

Brand new is brand new. I once bought a MusicMan bass from a dealer, and when I went to sell it years later found out that it was actually about 5 years old when I bought it, but it was brand new so I didn't really care.

It was NOS — a decidedly pre-vintage vibe.

Good point. When I called, I did inquire about a new one, I was told they didn't have the color in stock. Five minutes later, they call back, stating he found one. Now, he didn't specifically say it was new, but that's implied to me.

I guess my concern, is it actually warranty new? I'm not too concerned really about the price at this point, would've been a few dollars, I did get the hardshell for cheap.

They don't open for another hour.

I’d consider this brand new. You’re the original owner and it was sold by a real shop who bought it from the manufacturer. If there was a warranty (but I don’t think the 2xxx gretsches have much of one), you would be covered. The only missed opportunity would have been to maybe get 10% off from the shop for it sitting for 2 years, but that’s not guaranteed. Rest easy, you’re good here.

I bought a '72 SG Special from a Gibson dealer in '74. It had hung on the wall facing a West window for 2 years and the cherry finish had to clear on the front of the body. Bought it and sent in the warranty card along with the sales receipt.

Just fill out the warranty card and put it in an envelope with a copy of the sales receipt. Play it and enjoy it.

Thanks for the replies. No tags or warranty info came with it, I'll go to the Gretsch site.

Appreciate it everyone! I feel lot better about the purchase!

You agreed on a price to buy a guitar you like. How could that possibly be stupid?

Now, worrying about whether or not the purchase was stupid, well... *that* might be stupid. :D

Less posting, more playing. You have a new guitar in the house!

You can check, but if you're the first owner, the warranty should be good.
