She's underestimated as a musician. Her first record was absolutely wonderful; critics agreed, until it sold so many copies they decided there must be something wrong with her, and she got shuttled off into the pop star category. Sexiest voice to come along since Emmy Lou Harris, but that's really not what she's about.

I have her first album and it is great, though for whatever reason I don't revisit it as often as it deserves.

I can't hear her looks though, which bodes very, very well for most of the rest of my music collection.

She's a complete musician combined with an expressive vocalist with a distinctive vocal tonality that is hugely appealing. She's also a nice person with an interesting bio. Her famous father (who I saw in concert at the height of his popularity) had nothing to do with her upbringing or success, which she discovered and earned on her own. I like the comments posted about how the music "industry" doesn't know how to categorize her. I think this issue of having to put any artist in a category has become even more problematic with online distribution of music, as it is really easy to miss out on an artist who will not necessarily up on a search because of the way they are tagged. These so-called "crossover" artists (stupid name) can end up being bypassed. I'd actually call her "mainstream" because like some others, she is both jazz and pop, appeals to many who like "rock" as a genre. She reminds me a bit of Carole King, Roberta Flack, Phoebe Snow, and others who really created songs without working in a genre format.

There are a couple times in my life that I remember having to pull my car off to the side to listen when a song came on the radio. This song, when it first came out, was one of them (The other was in 1993 when Junior Brown’s Guit With It was released and the local station played Sugarfoot Rag…).

Norah is fabulous.

A great voice and "Interpreter."

She defy's categorization/style... much like Danny Gatton.

It's probably hindered her career (like Danny Gatton.)

But, she probably doesn't really care.

imo.

Is that Jesse Harris?
Don't know, don't care, but I dare say that a version of the song with HIM singing would not have been as big a hit as one by this "Pretty Girl"...

This debut from Norah Jones is incredibly good, and benefits from great session musicians, including (shameless plug) Torontonian Kevin Breit. He would have been in the above video but he chose not to go on tour because it would mean being away from his family.

Kevin also wrote a song that Norah recorded for her second album.
