Hello all- first post at TDPRI, thanks for having me.

I am in the process of building my first guitar (a tele/strat/gibson hybrid with P-90s), using mostly scrap I had lying around the house. I've come to the point of selecting a pickguard shape, and have entered analysis paralysis. I was hoping to show you a few pictures, and maybe get your thoughts. Love it, hate it, reminds you of some other guitar, anything goes. Maybe something someone says will help me make up my mind :)

I like the top middle one. Don't overthink it. Most pickguards are ugly.

    My favorite candidates:

    Cabronita:
    Warped Telecaster:
    Big with curved left edge
    Big with straighter left edge
Big with left edge mirroring body edge
Big with left edge tracking body edge
Thoughts? Maybe other guitars to look at for inspiration?

    Thanks!

Warped telecaster looks the best to me.

I don't have a solid opinion on the pickguard, but I love the hell out of that body shape. What a frickin' cool guitar.

I like it as is, no pickguard.

Man, I feel for you, I have been through that stage many time. Pickguard paralysis. Coming up with an original outline is easy - designing a pickguard that you know you're going to love for a long time is hard. :)

Another vote for warped tele here. That's the one that has the most rhythm, in the Kandinsky sense, in my humble opinion. Keeps that playful curve of the control plate going - control plate -> top curve -> lower horn -> headstock. That's a really cool design overall, good job there!

The smallest one looks best, maybe in aged pearl.

Thanks. It is a hybrid of tele and strat body outline, the bass horn is 1.25 inches shorter than a strat. Other than the small forearm cut, it is hard-edged like a tele. It uses a 24.75 scale strat neck, but with the fingerboard cut square like a tele. Lots of 'pick and choose' followed by lots of 'cut and try', mostly because I have never owned a guitar before, and don't know how to play :)

I'm partial to the cabronita and the warped tele, but I originally assumed I would have a full pickguard, so my pickup routes are not as clean as I would like. I'll have to do some rework if I choose a shape that exposes a route edge.

Really nice design! I agree with others, the warped Tele one is cool. I also like the Cabronita style one, but it doesn't carry so much of the quirkiness of your design forward :)

Yes- I keep deciding on one, and then later I walk by it and think, "nah, that's not quite right, i can't live with that" :)

The curved control plate with three knobs (vol, treb, bass) was sort of the starting point for the design. Everything else grew from there. The guiding principal was something like 'gibson hired danelectro to build them an answer to the tele, based on the same player feedback Leo was using to design the strat' :)

Cabonita looks best to me. Otherwise the lines on the full size pg's look awkward. Have you tried a more Fender-like Strat or J Bass curve?

I like the Warped Telecaster, Template 2 and Template 3 best.
Now it's easy to decide between the two.
Temp 2 is a solo guitar, Temp 3 is rhythm. so what do you play? :D;)

I like the first one in the pics with the guard on the guitar.

My pickups are quite a bit wider than a strat's, so they break through the left edge of the strat/jbass curve. I'll go try again, just to see how it looks, or if I can work around it.

Uhm, none of the above. I don't know how to play :)

    .

The right most one in the "first few ugly attempts", but delete the very thin strip between the neck pickup and neck, just trim where the step to the neck is at. Otherwise go with the Cabronita, except do a arch on the pickup side not the straight cut, make the arch the same radius as the left side of the melted snake head so you have design continuity.
