Gibson has used balsa in some of their guitar models. And--surprise--they made up a name for it: "chromyte." They figured consimers would be put off because there was no wind-up-rubber-band propeller included.

Balsa actually works well in guitars because it's lightweight and stiff.

This is my partscaster made from some kind of reclaimed rosewood. The luthier who built this told me the wood came from a boardwalk somewhere and had been drying in his barn for years. It was hollowed out to reduce weight still weighs about as much as my Les Paul. He burned up two blades making this. Very hard wood indeed. I have a redwood Tele as well. Also a black limba one and a mahogany Thinline with a flame maple top (inspired by the Scala in the last pic) being finished up by Mario Martin right now.

I have yet to use a traditional wood for a body .
    Rosewood ala Fender .
Cherry , Maple , Walnut , Norway Spruce and soon enough Dawn Redwood . Guess I'll do one out of Catalpa eventually .

This thread might just be the perfect cure for those still crying over swamp Ash but is not helping out with GAS in the least.

My avatar redwood parts-caster is still in process of being built but it's the loudest I've ever heard an electric play when not plugged in. Super resonant and very lightweight, local guy built it from some reclaimed housing lumber.

I have a similar body made from Australian Cedar otherwise known as "Toon Wood". Exquisitely beautiful with just a clear lacquer coat. They wood was cut from chainsaw roughed out logs from an abandoned mill on the Big island of Hawaii. I was told that the logs were from trees cut over a hundred years ago. Really special stuff.

I have a partscaster with an agathis Squier Bullet Tele body. It sounds killer and it’s light.
