The standard in Germany for area is the “Saarland”. I’m pretty sure the football field is universal, they use it here too. When something is an indefinite distance away, it’s “over yonder”.

A wienerdog. The maximum height per AKC standard is 9".

Example: The Statue of Liberty is as tall as 406.66666666 wienerdogs stacked atop one another.

When I bought my property here in central Texas about 20 years ago, the deed description uses "varas" which is an old Spanish/Mexican unit of measurement equal to 33 1/3 inches. Needless to say, the surveyor was not happy!

Also, there is reference to one of the corners being marked by an X on Bois du Arc (bodark) tree. This deed was from 1937, so no telling how far back it goes (probably to the late 1800's is my guess).

And when my wife and I measure stuff with a tape measure, we get lazy and add "ticks" to anything over 1/8 inch increments, cuz my brain can't get around calculating 16ths! As in 3/4 plus a tick instead of 13/16ths. Depending on which tape measure I use, I may actually use mm (as all of you non-US folks laugh!)

Cheers,
Doug

I'm personally fond of cubits- really no stranger than feet, or fingers (for booze) or hands (for horses).
People into sewing, cooking, woodworking etc. are apt to measure things in terms of their own hand- a first knuckle, or whatever.
Then there's "tall enough to hunt geese with a rake", or so rich "he's got money to burn wet dogs with"

For as long as I can remember, newspapers in the UK have used unusual measurement units.

Expensive liquids are measured in malt whisky, for example printer ink 100 times more expensive than malt whiskey.

Areas have two units of measurements, football(soccer) pitches...

1.5-1.7 acres = 1 football pitches (alternatively 16 tennis courts)
1 oil tanker= 3.5 football pitches.

...and Wales.

1 UK = 10 Wales
1 Bulgaria = 5.25 Wales
1 Alabama = 6.5 Wales

I'm aware in the US, certain objects are measured in Empire State buildings but what other non-standard units of measurement are used throughout the world?

Doesn't a football pitch vary in size? I have heard Wembly is one of the larger ones, but by how much?

Just a curiosity.

And a bunch of freshly picked black-eyed peas is a “mess.”

If you’ve ever shelled any you would understand.

Over here we sometimes have “meters”. It’s a good comparative unit since they’re just over 3’ tall.

Wow - meters you can still put coins in - how quaint :) In these parts you have to wave your phone/debit card at them while chanting something like "...just ****king work, you poxy bast**d..." The chant is optional, but I hear it used a lot.

I used to work with a gentleman of the Glaswegian persuasion many moons ago...who referred to very small measurements as being 'smaller than a ball hair's width'.

At least I think that's what he was saying

I believe there’s a Billy Joe Shaver song in which a woman’s posterior is estimated to be more than a few axe handles wide.

And speaking of equine references, horses are measured in so many hands high.

Yeah, I suppose so.

But please allow me to correctly spell “skosh” as used in English.

(which comes from the Japanese word sukoshi.)
Good lookin' out, I didn't realize it had an accepted spelling. Not a word I use a lot in written form (obviously).

They do, from about 1.6 acres to 1.9.
The newspapers etc normally use the get out clause by saying
"x times the size of the average football pitch".
