It all starts with this old tempate from one of Randys' old 'birds.
And a slab of quartersawn mahogany, one peice. That's kinda special in itself. 20180922_213156.jpg

Roughed out the body with a jigsaw. Cut the neck pocket...I've had this pau ferro tele neck laying around..
Why not use it? I think the neck shape suits the body 20180706_104224.jpg 20180706_104207.jpg

And yes, that's a Babicz bridge. I have been experimenting with aluminum as a tone enhancer before.
I have yet to decide upon the bridge pickup, going with a Jess Loreiro minibucker for the neck.
I have shorted the template design at the waist 3/8, and extended the upper horn about 1/8, as well as having the neck sit into the body further than the Gibson design.
    Hoping for a better balance.
    Body planed to 1-1/2".

Went ahead and routed the neck pickup, and the control cavity, sort of Les Paul style.
Hate the control layout on real 'birds.
The other route is for a rear mounted strat jack. 20180922_215449.jpg 20180922_215107.jpg

Working out the tummy cut. Cut mostly with a sawsall.
    Also carbon painting the cavities.
    Note the 'strat jack'.
This will actually be quite handy.
Not on the face or the side, and turned correctly so you can "see the hole". 20180922_215752.jpg 20180922_215818.jpg

And here's a mockup of what I have thusfar.
I have simulated the control layout. Upper ferrule is to be a full size selector switch, one vol, one tone, and lower ferrule to be a mini switch for paralell / series.
I still do not know what I want for a bridge pickup.
I have a few run of the mill humbuckers laying around.
Or..nother minibucker? Kinda want to drop a tele in there G.E. smith style.
    What do you think?
    No pickguard.
A firebird will be lazer etched into the upper bout, and filled with shiny silver and gold stuff.
    Gold leaf perhaps. 20180922_220628.jpg

Day 2. Installing these very nice open back locking staggered tuners from hipshot.
Very nice quality, and light for lockers.
I will also be drilling the neck ferulles and test fitting neck.
No traditional neck plate. 20180923_163148.jpg 20180923_163607.jpg

Where did you hear about the pickup winder? Not a name I know, but there are lots of good options these days for sure.

    Cheers,

He's in Spain, prices are great. I ran across him from an add offering a telecaster pickup with side by side coils.
Humbucking in a single coil window. I was impressed.
Don't think you can beat the quality vrs price.

The daunting task of piloting wiring tunnels pickup to pickup then wiring cavity.
I have found hat simply drilling staight thru the neck pocket with a long bit easiest connects the two chambers.

Also , I should note you want a real good forsner type bit for doing the neck ferrule holes.
These cuts have to be the cleanest of the whole project. 20180924_200839.jpg 20180924_201448.jpg 20180924_200948.jpg

Ok, bridge pickup. Yeah, Tstyle would be cool. This is a Tele site after all. But a P90 in a mahogany slab has also been known to rock.

    Cheers,

Strat jack plate on the backside? That's pretty nifty.

Ok. Beginning the wire inlay after scrimshawing out the image.
    Using copper wire 18 guadge.
I'm still not shure what to call this project

So, basically I am putting superglue into the etched trough and pushing the wire down into it.
    Labour intensive. Eyestrain.

Pots , switch, series parrallel switch mounted. Back of neck pocket shaped to neck and vice versa a bit.
    Ready to drill string holes.
    Installing abalone fret markers.
Some progress on the inlay. This will take some time. Copper wire that will be sanded flat/flush. 20181004_204009.jpg

This project is 4000% awesome. Love it! I vote reverse-angled strat p/u at the bridge, based on having one in a mid-60s Melody Maker years ago. To my ear the twangier low strings and mellower high strings worked well, clean or distorted.

That guitar had a gued-in neck; not sure how appllicable that would be as a pint of comparison given that you're using a bolt-on neck...
