My uncle says he has a couple of boxes of old tubes. I've happened on this sort of situation before, but it turned out most of them were irrelevant to my amps Vibrolux Reverb 68 Custom (6L6, 12AX7, 12AT7, 5AR5) and a Blues Junior IV (EL84, 12AX7).

Is there a cheat sheet anywhere that lists the other names of these tubes over the years so I can make a decision about whether to make the drive to get them? Surely I am not the first person on this mission! Thanks for any help.

the E series tubes are european El84,El34 designations etc. (12AT7, 12AX7,etc) are 12 volt

a good tube substitution/conversion chart will be of benifit to you but be carfull as some tubes although rated for the same function will have a different pin standard

Probably a bunch of TV tubes. Some TV tubes can be used for guitar but not much for mass-market guitar amps.

Probably what Printer2 said. Most collections of tubes have been picked over and only the stuff that's of little to no use in guitar amps is left. I still like to go through them though!
Once filled the back of a Suburban with free boxes full of tubes and scored a bunch of nice 5y3s, 5u4s, some new in the box. That's all fine and dandy but old USA rectifier tubes last about forever. Outside of that a few used 12ax7s and a couple of used 6v6s.
Then there's the guys on Craigslist with the picked over lots like this one, https://fargo.craigslist.org/msg/d/elizabeth-new-old-stock-vacuum-tube-lot/6879646919.html .
He either hasn't got a clue or he's hoping for a clueless guy with money. :)

But yeah there's resources online you can identify tubes with, there's several tubes that'll work as 12ax7s for example. But there's hundreds that'll plug into the socket, not work at all and maybe cause smoking, so choose wisely.
Hopefully you find some good ones !

Every major tube seller website (not "brands" - dealers who carry both new and NOS tubes) has complete tube specs, pin charts, and name cross reference/substitution lists.

Add to that list the 6681, another 12AX7 type, military designation high quality preamp tube.
I have a couple of them.

Not to say some TV tubes will not make nifty guitar amps. You just have to know which ones will play nice and build around them. But that may be above most player's pay grade.

That add is like the people who try to sell beat up old record player consoles listed as "rare, antique $1500, firm".

"RCA 12AU7: Retail at $99.95"... for what, a garbage bag full of them?

Yeah I can't imagine people tripping all over themselves for 12au7s over a buck a piece. :)
