I do the "shy beginner" thing...grab an electric, sneak off in a corner, and play it acoustically. Barre chords up and down the neck, some cowboy chords, run a few scales, and then noodle around some bluesy lead lines I'm working on.

I can pretty much guarantee that whenever you go into GC someone will be playing so loud you will be lucky to even hear what you're playing. Oddly enough none of the guys that crank it up in GC ever end up buying the guitar.

Have you ever noticed that Why a tense aviator - Stairway to heaven are anagrams of each other.

Mostly a Beatles song, 'I saw here standing there' usually. :)

Well, if you're in the store, it's gonna be Stairway. I tend to counter program. If the other guy is klutzing his way through Eruption, I'll play Vincent. If the other guy is playing Cannon in D, I'll play Dead Skin Mask.

I know the No Stairway thing is some kind of cool internet meme, but it's really tired.

First thing that I do is make sure that the guitar is out of tune. Then I play using simple shapes and scale runs that anyone can visually recognize, but I play them at a tempo that swings. People scratch their heads and say to themselves, "Man, that cat can play, but he sounds awful. Must be the guitar. Gotta be crazy to consider that ax."

The Who's, "Won't get fooled again". Crank the amp you're plugged into. Start windmilling power chords and count how many seconds it takes for the highly trained guitar and amp staff at GC to come running down the aisles at you and shut you down. You don't stop counting at "Hey turn that down!"....you keep counting until the store manager turns the amp down or unplugs the guitar. Great fun if you have an open day and don't need to return to this particular store anytime soon.

Why can't someone play Stairway if that's what they know and like?

I tend to be listening for specific characteristics and specific things, so so open chords, some closed jazz chords, some bendy things (which I don't do that much normally) to check for fretting out or choking. Really let some notes hold and ring so I can check that out. I mean, all that stuff can be resolved with setup anyway, so I just want to hear the guitar.

I don't give two craps what someone in a store thinks I can or can't play. Turns out I rarely play electric guitar on stage by myself, without a bass player, drums or a mic.

God, no. Why would anyone want to play some guitar with ancient strings, whose last setup was at the factory seven years ago, and recently wrangled by some diseased rando with lord-knows how many STD-based open skin lesions?
    No. Thank. You.

If I'm actually a guitar store, the two I pull out the most are "Sweet Jane" & "Dreaming" (Blondie). Both are simple, easy to remember and give me an idea of how the instrument will sound with stuff I'm likely to play on it.

I Want to hear the Guitar.
I play Clean with no FX. Chords to check the intonation, scales and sonic shapes to check the action.
Do it all over again with different Pick-up settings ...

    As far a a go-to song, I don't have one.
I like to figure-out what the Guitar sounds like before I put the expectations of a Song on it.

Scale low down and around the 12th fret. If that sounds intonated, ATTYA.

i turn the amp way up there and play STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN. then i sing my improvised lyrics: "i you really can't stand this song, go get another job, somewhere a wharehouse is hiring mayqueens..."

and i sing it, like, real loud.
