Love the song... it's a fav. Is there any guy who's not at one time or another found his girl stepping out with another man? The song so well describes the gamut of emotions that discovery conjures.

This was one of John Lennon's first songs to tell a complete story. The boy knocks on his girl's door, knows she is home because he sees her in the window, but she does not answer.

Your version is a good listen done solo. Nice work!

Always liked this song. It was a few years later that I realized it was actually a "stalker" song. Lennon wrote a few songs about unhealthy, obsessive love.

I love this song! I really like the grammar in the bridge and the way it shifts point of view. It goes

If I were you, I'd realise that I
Love you more than any other guy
And I'll forgive the lies that I
Heard before, when you gave me no reply

With "If I were you" the "I" shifts so that "I'd realize" is really "you'd realize." Then the next "I" is the speaker again. Then if she realizes that he loves her the most, he will forgive her. The blame is on her for lying, not on him for basically stalking her.

But really, the whole song is from the speaker's point of view. When he briefly tries to see things from her point of view, it quickly snaps back to being about him. He's not getting the message. The tangled up point of view is analogous to the speaker's confused state of mind. It is brilliantly done.

My youngest brother used to "DJ" for wedding receptions and anniversary parties. At one time, one of his most requested songs for newlyweds was the Police's Every Breath You Take. Sometimes he'd ask the couple, "You do know this song is about obsession and stalking, right?" No, they thought it was a simple love song.......

There is another version of this song "I'll Be watching You" which is a stalker song.

Indeed. Lennon actually said things that must not be said OUT LOUD, which endeared him to me and many others. Shows insecurity and vulnerability, which can be a dark rider.
