    .. said no guitarist ever.

Today, I was offered a large box of old tubes for the price of... free. They were dirty and the cardboard box was on its last legs. But, what the heck. Right? I was told that the guy that gave them to my friend said they were all new tubes but the boxes disintegrated over the years that they were stored in a shed. Sure. But far be it from me to bicker over free tubes.

Sorting through them, I did find some useable tubes. 5881, 5751, 7189, EF86 and a few 12AX7, 12AT7, 12AU7 and 6X4 types. There were six metal 6L6 tubes that were dirty and rusted. They all tested good on the old Hickok! (The amp tubes are in the clear shoebox on the right)

Looks like I need to build something. Maybe a radio? Anyone need a 25C5?

I've sold bad tubes on Ebay, fully described as bad, yet they still bring $$. Some folks find that they work for them, they write me back and are happy with them. When I say "bad", I mean they've tested low, and had gas leaks, have a little noise, etc. Just goes to show, one mans trash is anothers' treasure.

    Don't chuck out 6AV6 single triodes (half a 12AX7) or 6AQ5s (7 pin version of 6V6).

6AU6 is another under the radar tube. They can be used to make high gain audio input tube circuts. There were also a few 12BH&s in the lot.

You have nearly enough to build a computer there. Let us know if TDPRI has better tone when read on it.

I actually have a schematic for a vacuum tube computer if you need one!

That's just the flip. They need another one for the flop.

a friend of mine found a big box of tubes and paid $2 for it. i'm excited so when he brings them over, all of them are tv tubes. worthless to me. i'd sent him a list of audio/guitar amp tubes since he and his wife are antique dealers but he won't look at the list. i thanked him anyway since one day he will strike gold.

    play music!

    Ha. Ha.

Nothing that complicated. I think I have schematic for the discrete circuits like memory cells, etc.

I also have a schematic for a vacuum tube opamp. It would be fun to build a Tube Screamer made of actual tubes one day!
