Tipping was removed from all places decades ago here. There are decent minimum wages paid ....

I worked as a fine dining waiter for about three or four years while I was going to college.

Specifically, the most ass-kissing of the service jobs. Took the most crap - had to be on it all the time.

But I specifically got into it because it was the most money.

On a decent Saturday night, I’d walk out with $350 bucks easy.

And as always, the more you hustled the more you made.

And at most, I would be there for six or seven hours.

$50+ an hour . On average. A college kid.

This was in 1986 !

I cannot imagine a mandatory minimum for fine dining wait staff that would be satisfactory.

Holy crap! This is getting more ridiculous every day.

First let me state, I am NOT El Cheapo when it comes to tipping, my wife and I both spent time in the Restaurant business, and if anything, we tend to over-tip... especially for great service.

Everywhere I go now, has a box to tick, when you finish your ATM transaction.. Would you like to leave a tip?
For a Sub sandwich? No.. not so much.

My meltdown point for this nonsense, just peaked this morning.

I was ordering some custom fit T-shirts online.. Get to the checkout:

How much gratuity would you like to add? 5% 10% 20% OTHER

Uhh... none, GTFO.... order canceled.
Pay with cash = no problem!

It's not hard for me to bang a zero on the ATM Machine, what really got under my skin, was an online shirt shop (that's already pricey) asking how much I want to tip.

The only way this gets bested, is the next time I buy a new car.... The finance guy asks for a gratuity.

I dealt with that yesterday and it upsets me. I’ve been getting to go food for over 50 years and never had to tip except the past couple of years. What is this? And they stare at you when you hit that screen. Makes you want to pay cash all the time.

Exactly! Terrible business owners are dropping like flies.

Bye bye!
Terrible business owners should have market forces "encourage" them to exit their business endeavors. That's not what this conversation is about. It's specifically about being in a transaction that does not require personal attention or variable levels of service and expecting to be remunerated as if it does. At-the-table wait positions are paid in such a manner that their tips are expected to be part of their wage - not the case with point-of-sale transactions. Don't get me wrong - I appreciate and respect good service. When I am at a restaurant with at-the-table service, I tip well....when that service is exemplary or even just personal, I tip very well. But when I'm at a point of sale establishment, and the representative has basically just reached for my order and handed it to me - all while being paid their agreed wage there should be no implication that a tip is deserved - if they are not happy with their situation, they should seek something else.

Business owners that adopt payment software that implies a tip is inspected should instruct their staff to explain that this is not the case.

The bizarre tradition of tipping is a relic of the Jim Crow era. Business owners rely on it to augment their income.

Just as Wal Mart relies on tax payer funded public assistance to augment their income.

It really is an embarrasing part of our society. Sadly, there are too many folks who seem to be brainwashed into thinking that this is the only way.
Obviously, they're incorrect.

Most of the rest of the world doesn't participate in this nonsense.

They can ask all they want, doesn't mean I will. I would love to see my mechanic put his hand out for a tip after raping me on a set of shocks.

I am old fashioned, I tip some professions (wait staff, barber, cabbie, etc.) generously, but I do not apply that standard to very many professions.

I remember my first trip to NYC and the doorman at my hotel grabbing the door seconds before I did...then putting his hand out for a tip. I am from the sticks, not only can I open my own door, but we call it being polite if you want to open a door for somebody else. Neither situation requires a monetary incentive.

custom tshirts? ha ha, awesome!
LOL... this component took longer to come up than I expected.

I'm at a "in between point" of my middle life body... I'm 6 feet tall, still lift weights 5 days a week, so I still have fairly broad shoulders, and a chest somewhere between "pecs" and man-boobs... But my flat stomach left me, when I lost the stomach to ride my bike years ago... out of fear of being smashed by a texting/driving idiot, and I'll never not eat Italian and Mexican food.

So a large fits me great, until I lift my arms and my belly shows itself.

An XL T-shirt looks like a moo-moo on me.

So these were custom fitted...

I found another place that offered the same thing, without begging for a tip... So I'll update how that works for me..
