Holy crap! This is getting more ridiculous every day.

First let me state, I am NOT El Cheapo when it comes to tipping, my wife and I both spent time in the Restaurant business, and if anything, we tend to over-tip... especially for great service.

Everywhere I go now, has a box to tick, when you finish your ATM transaction.. Would you like to leave a tip?
For a Sub sandwich? No.. not so much.

My meltdown point for this nonsense, just peaked this morning.

I was ordering some custom fit T-shirts online.. Get to the checkout:

How much gratuity would you like to add? 5% 10% 20% OTHER

Uhh... none, GTFO.... order canceled.

At a point in my life where a 10-15% tip at almost most fast food places that provide really good service, that I had a good experience before, will make more a difference to the worker than to me, so I tip. I tip even at Subway or Jimmy John's, not McD's. And when I go to a sit down place, if it's good service, I tip 20-30%. Again, because it's gonna impact their lives more than it's gonna impact mine.

No wait person, no tip. I got stuck at a pizza place the other day. The receipt offered no escape without signing for a tip, they already had my card. The pizza place was one of those places where you get the pizza, then take it home and cook it in YOUR own oven. I'm looking all over for an exit on the machine, because I don't want to tip them. Finally, the guy sees, that I'm not going to hit okay, and does something and the receipt comes through without at tip. I watched them very carefully when they were putting my pizza together, I did not want the rat's tail they were saving for a guy like me.

I do tip when we go to a place where we are waited on, most times generously, I don't tip otherwise. For Pete's sake, the guys at the recycling center have a tip box now. You do ALL the work there, and they want a tip? They holler at you if you happen to put the bottles in the BLUE can, then want a tip? Sheesh.

Lost in the 909 trying to find my way home
Tip for performance. I was in the Fresno Riverpark Macy’s the late afternoon BEFORE Thanksgiving Day looking for an item of clothing. The Dockers table display had been turned into a mountain of disorganized merchandise. When I asked for assistance from the harried-appearing floor walking young woman, she dropped what she was doing to assist me in the search. After 15 minutes, checking with the receiving dock, digging fruitlessly through the pile, we concluded that it just wasn’t to be my day.
But, like Randle Patrick McMurphy in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest SHE TRIED.
And I wondered, actually, marveled as to why she would go to such lengths at minimum wage. Perhaps it was because I’m older and treated her with respect? I don’t know.
Anyway, I slipped her a $20 bill for her efforts.
Black Friday loomed two days away.
Disclosure: my daughter escaped a career in Retail 10 years ago but that didn’t occur to me at the time.

I’m seeing the heavy-handed tip “suggestion” more and more these days. Like TD, I’m usually a generous tipper, but the customer should always control the amount, if any at all. I had to smile about the “rat tail” thing that TD mentioned. That’s why I never send food back to the kitchen to be redone. I either let it go or ask to have the final amount adjusted. People who work in the food service industry have shared horror stories with me about the kitchen’s revenge on cranky diners. (No offense to restaurant workers, I’m sure most of the stories I’ve been told aren’t true, I hope.)

I usually tip the workers at mom and pops places a couple of bucks, not so much the corporate fast food places.
the thing you need to watch out for these days are the added "fees" for whatever they want to call them at restaurants. I've seen "fees" for 2-3% on restaurant tabs.
I've never seen tip requests on retail but you can be sure the "tips" aren't going to the workers.

Gotta pay attention these days.....

I once went to a restaurant and got some food to go and they handed me a tip tray. I really liked the food but after that i never went back on principal.
