any moonshine in them california hills?
Also camp fuel (Coleman "white gas").
These high proof alcohols are also banned in California.
Building and restoring guitars is fun but I like to diversify my hobbies
Yep. Ideally, you'd throw away the first bit, catch the prime, then cut it off before it runs too long. If you don't do that it goes one of two ways: if it all is collected together in one container and mixed together, it won't be the best, but it probably won't kill you. Wine has small amounts of methanol as well, but it isn't concentrated amounts. However, if you think about the old days with huge operations with hundreds of gallons running - if that first "bit" of methanol is enough to fill up a whole jar or jug by itself, you'll be drinking straight methanol. That will kill you.
I came back from my brothers in Arizona with 12 cans.
Had my fingers crossed that I didn't die in a fiery Pinto type accident.
For a few years, you couldn't even buy paint thinner here (Just this crap called paint thinner substitute or cleaner IIRC) But lately I see regular old paint thinner here again... Haven't bought any, cause I still have 6 gallons of paint thinner I brought home from my Washington state a few years ago, while visiting my Dad lol.
Reno.......don't use your work truck
the moonshiners probably put the methanol in their gas tanks for the next run...
My understanding is that part of what separates good hard liquor from awful hard liquor is how hard you chop the heads and tails, or if you run them through the still again.
I know fermentation backwards, forwards, and sideways, but my only distillation experience is freezing water out of cider with a chest freezer. I’ve done some of the reading though.
The chop is the important part. Run it ALL through again and don't do anything different and you'll get the same result but stronger. The only way to remove it is to remove it. No matter of technique or filtering. Methanol distills a few degrees earlier, so it IS going to run first. You have to remove it.
In my experience, 90% of the "moonshine" I've tasted the past several years - and I'm in Georgia and live in a historic moonshine area and had my fair share - most of it is just Everclear or 100 proof vodka these days. If it's "apple pie" I bet 90/10 it's gov't liquor. If it's clear, cheap, and "smooth", it's $20/half gallon 100 proof vodka they are selling for $20/quart and a jar. Takes a lot of shine to know what shine tastes like....
I think what is going on here is CA is trying to stop these items being used commercially in medium and large quantities, If you are an individual there are ways around it.
They'll have to set up a Shellacers Anon group soon....
and put people through the 10 step plan for using water based materials...
When you consider that "bans" or restrictions are put in place to protect the general public, and the general public has it's fair share of nuts, fools, morons, maniacs, cheaters, and manipulators, it puts a little different light on the subject.
Folks without common sense, or in some cases no conscience.
You may be a responsible and intelligent individual, but that doesn't mean that your neighbor is .
In the wrong hands, and sometimes even in the "right" hands, some of this stuff can be deadly.
I've found that in most cases there is always some sort of work-around that lets you get the job done properly anyhow.
Do your research .
There's a diet orange soda shortage too.
Isn’t distilling a form of filtering?
I guess - you won't get solids through a vapor. But, methanol runs maybe 3-5 degrees before ethanol, so there's no way to get to ethanol temperature without going through the methanol distillation.
And perhaps your opinion is shaped by many long and thoughtful conversations with some of the many (now-former) Californians who have left their mess behind and are flooding into Montana (and Colorado, Idaho, Arizona, etc)?
I've had the same conversations here with (now-former) Californians, Washingtonians and Oregonians. I am not buying what they are selling, however.
If you aren't willing to change your license plate to AZ in the first week you are here, please go back to whenceforth you came.
Jobs picking up their trash.
There is nothing to see here. Go to Aruba, not Yuma.
Isn't common sense and a conscience outlawed too? How's all that working out?
