The permissible shell length may be stamped on the firearm somewhere, likely near the stated caliber (or bore). My old .410 is stamped 3", although I've never once used anything but 2 3/4".

2.75” or 2.5”?

Some folks are just addicted to more and more power in pistols. I knew an ex-marine who had a .454 Casull pistol. He took me out and demonstrated how it kicked. He was a big old brute probably six foot five inches tall and weighed about two hundred and sixty pounds of mostly muscle.

I watched that thing nearly bang his head several times as he was firing at targets about one hundred yards away, and quite successfully at that. He asked me if I wanted to shoot it, I told him not as long as I stay in my right mind.
I shot a .44 Magnum. Once.

I learned pretty young, that guns big enough to be uncomfortable shooting are something I would never become proficient with. So I stick with my .38 and 9mm pistols, and I have a 12gauge that I would sell because I recently bought my first 20 and love it.

A pharmacist acquaintance of mine, big fellow as you described, had a .500 Smith & Wesson. I asked him how often he took it out, and he said not often. It kicked like a rented mule and cost him a couple of dollars every time he pulled the trigger.
No thanks.

Barack 616 gun shop in Grand Rapids, MI has a decent selection.

:)
Hey I pass by that place a few times per year. I’ve never been in it. I had no idea they were a major online retailer.

Edit: I just realized that my son shoots there. I’m not into guns so I forgot about that.

My place is sanctuary to dozens of quail, my apology to the hundreds that I shot in my youth. I have the two .410s now, from my dad's guns, but haven't fired them since those days
That is awesome. I hunted them in high school with my buddies, one of whom had a great dog.

Sadly, the last time I saw any around here was decades ago.
Take care of them.

Fortunately, there seem to be abundant dove, and I'm actually planning my first hunt in six years in September. Haskell, near Abilene.

@Gladhander

410 shotshells are standard size.

It's cheapest to buy locally because ammo is heavy and shipping jacks up the cost.

If you have Cabela's/Bass Pro/Shiel's/etc., buy there. If out of stock, place an order.

For online, check Palmetto State Armory. They have sales and list the price per round so you can easily comparison shop.
I second palmetto armory. I have a 410 for varmint protection and own two boxes of shells. That’s enough to fend of swamp creatures for the time being.

This is our bobwhite quail here in TN. They were plentiful 50 years ago when I was a kid. Hardly ever saw them 20-30 years ago. They’re making a comeback now. I have a couple of coveys on my place now. I love sitting on the deck with a cup of coffee listening to them call “Bob WHITE!

I was in a situation where I shot about 150 3" magnum 12 gauge shells in an old 870 pump one time. I was supposed to shoot two days, one of my good clients saw that my arm had turned blue clear down to my forearm and asked me what the heck I had done to myself.

I told him what I had done, and that I had another shoot coming up with the same ammo on the following day. He came back a little later and left a very nice gas operated auto shotgun with a raised comb, and a good recoil system. I honestly don't remember what it was probably a Berreta I finished my shoot in style. I don't think I could have raised that 870 to my shoulder that second day.

The client who loaned me that shotgun was a good friend to boot. He came by again and told me just to keep the shotgun. I kept it for a while, but never felt quite right about it, and took it back to him. I should have just kept it. That thing was nice to shoot.

All the rest of my hunting was done with a Nylon 1100 Remington chambered for two and three quarter. You could shoot that thing all day long and never get sore. It was so light it was really easy to swing through a bird with. All of that stuff is in my past though I haven't shot but one time since my son passed almost twelve years ago.

This is a very cool thread...i hope nobody gets it locked. My maternal grandfather also bought me my first firearm, an H&R Topper Model 158. .410.

It is still as tight as the day I opened the present, and although I sold a lot of beloved guns in a divorce panic, I'll never part with this, for obvious reasons.
I did reluctantly have the barrel shortened to 18.5" for like a truck gun or snake charmer. I only did so after I bought my third Mossberg pump gun.

I'd like to have a semi auto but I think I'm a bit old to buy anything else.

I do agree we need a firearms thread here, but they tend to bring out the worst in all but the veteran members. Unfortunately.

Shouldn't be a problem. Guns and guitars are essential household items. They also lend themselves to collecting, just like guitars.I've actually traded a gun for a guitar. I'd love to see a thread for firearms here.

This guy's not a pet, but he's worthy of a posting. I found him admiring his reflection at a strip mall. The bobcat was hanging out at my beagles favorite swimming hole. They picked up his scent but luckily ran right passed him. Never even saw him. I just realized I posted this to the wrong thread. It was meant for random pictures. Oops!

Try Walmart. No local Gun Shop or sporting goods store like Dicks or Cabelas? Most 410 shoot 3” shells but check your receiver to make sure. If it says 3” you’ll be able to shoot both sizes. Stay away from slugs or buckshot I would get 6, 7.5, or 8 shot to target shoot with. Good luck
